Went for my honeymoon around 17 or 18 years ago. The marriage didn't last too long, unfortunately, so maybe the place is jinxed.
I'm struggling to remember too much about it, if I'm honest. I think we were in an all-inclusive place for three weeks and took various excursions. Stone Town was fascinating, particularly the remains of the slave market. It's incredulous to believe what those poor people went through. I also remember visiting a local village school with all the stationery I'd crammed my suitcase with, and being greeted like some sort of king by the schoolchildren. I wish I could have taken more. The people were lovely, and it's a beautiful island. |

Yes we went in 2009 for about a week following a safari in Tanzania. I agree with pp that Stonetown is really interesting, I think we did an excursion to a spice plantation whilst we were there.
Following Stonetown we moved to a beach resort for three or four days. I remember doing a snorkelling excursion from there, initially they tried to cram us onto a boat that was already heaving, I started a mini rebellion as I did not think it was safe and another boat was found. It was good snorkelling. The beaches are beautiful, white sand but the poverty is also evident and sad. We often say we will go back and repeat the same type of holiday, i.e. safari then Zanzibar, I would research where exactly to stay very carefully next time, we did a planned adventure tour last time and didn't get to pick the Zanzibar beach resort, we wouldn't go back to that particular place. |

We went after a Tanzania safari. Beach was pretty, did a snorkelling tour. We had a guide to show us round Stone Town. A good chill out at the end of a safari, but not sure I’d go just at visit Zanzibar.
