Normally anything with a diesel engine will have the glow plug symbol on the display

Also you can usually find a sticker on the inside of the fuel door that tells you the fuel type

Nearly all rentals are Petrol however there are some Diesel entering the rental chain.

How to tell if a car is Diesel.
Turn the key so the lights show on the dashboard, if it was Diesel there will be a light to show glowplugs warming light Petrol cars have spark plugs Diesel do not.

So if you see this sign it is diesel if not it will be petrol, put cheapest in.

The glow plug light may only stay on for less than a split second when the ignition is turned to position one or keyless upon the first press.

The best way is checking the fuel filler cap flap.

I am intrigued. What kind of diesel vehicles are entering the rental chain? Surely there are very obvious stickers on them.

Interesting but if they do start renting them out they are going to gave to make it extremely clear to the customers. No American is going to question which fuel to put in if not explicitly told the car is diesel.

Open fuel cap and sniff. Petrol and diesel smell totally different.
