Mobile Help with planning.

Currently in the planning phase of a trip to japan for 2 weeks in october this year. We plan on few days in osaka, few days in Kyoto, day trips to nara and Mount Fuji. Then into tokyo. Will probably stay near disneyland resort for around 5 nights and do 3 days disney and a couple days in city. Are we best flying in and out of tokyo or flying into osaka then home from tokyo?

When we did an itinerary similar to yours we went in and out of Tokyo, but it’s easy to travel between places by train and so I think what’s best for you will depend on the order of your stay, to be honest. If you started in Tokyo, went to Fuji from there, and then ended up near Osaka/Kyoto/Nara, then flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka would make more sense IMO.

Edit - sorry, it would be the other way around as you suggest, but you know what I mean LOL. I would probably do the trip to Fuji from Tokyo rather than Osaka though.

For a few days in osaka/kyoto you can commute to either city. I would base near kyoto main station then you can get around easier. A JR pass will pay for itself with a return bullet train.

Hotels near disney are larger and cheaper (for the same class, you can always budget of coursr). Tokyo central and surrounds are commutable from maihama station.

We’re planning a couple of weeks split between Tokyo and Kyoto this summer so can share my thoughts on what we’ve found out so far.

We’re flying in to and out of Tokyo. Considered into or out of Osaka but as the train is only 2.5 hours from Osaka back to Tokyo it was a fair bit cheaper to return from there.

Bear in mind that if you were considering getting. JR rail pass for a week or more, then it generally costs in with a return from Tokyo to Osaka. If you open-jaw your flight the rail pass probably won’t cost in - you can check via a calculator here japan-guide/railpass/

As mentioned it appears that as Osaka and Kyoto are so close (20 mins on fastest trains) there’s no need to split your stay unless you have specific reason e.g. spending a few days at Universal. Of the two, most recommend staying in Kyoto over Osaka. We have 7 nights in Kyoto and plan day trips to Nara, Himej, Osaka and Hiroshima.

That is what we did last year also. In and out of Tokyo with a 14 day rail pass. We stayed in Tokyo (day trip to Hakone) and Kyoto with day trips to Hiroshima, Nara and Himeji. We never made it to Osaka but are going back to Japan again this year.

We are again based in Tokyo and Kyoto but taking different day trips. We won’t be going to the Disney Parks or Universal though.

Edit: the rail pass is also great for travelling around Tokyo on the Yamanote line.
