Desperate to get my daughter and son in law home. Need a rant..
Two weeks ago, on the last day of their Disney holiday, my son in law became seriously ill and was in ICU on life support. They discovered a very nasty virus that was damaging his heart. A perfectly healthy 36 year old man with no medical problems. My poor daughter went out the room to find a drink and when she came back in, they were shocking him back. They’ve been through hell. We came out 10 days ago. He was discharged a week ago and they have been at our hotel. He’s been signed by two doctors as fit to fly but the insurance company are still deciding if he needs medical assistance on the flight and to what degree. Once that’s decided, they need to find flights home as their original flight (two weeks ago) was with TC and can’t be rescheduled because they were a no show (he was rushed to hospital on the day they were due to fly home and we couldn’t get in touch with TC). We need to go home tomorrow and I don’t want to leave them here I know they are grown ups and can manage without us but they will have no car (we have been taking them out for short outings) so will be stuck at the hotel because he can’t walk far. They did get a Lyft to the cinema yesterday as we were at BG and it would have been too much for him. Sorry if this is all a bit jumbled, my head is all over the place. Even if they get the all clear to fly, flights are so expensive one way from here (maybe a knock on of TC) and that’s assuming they can even get one! On top of paying for the hotel, they are getting up there on their credit card. They need to make a claim for associated expenses when they get home so they are keeping receipts but it has to be paid up front. Thankfully, the medical expenses have been approved and the insurance company are dealing with that direct with the hospital.
If you got this far, thanks for reading. If you didn’t, don’t worry, it helps to get it out

I'm really sorry to read about your son-in-law but glad he's on the mend. What a relief it must be that he's got insurance and that they're not messing him about when it comes to approving payments.
If it does come down to a long stay at the hotel whilst waiting for flights, they could try speaking with the insurer again to try and get them to pay for the hotel direct as they have done with the expenses or to reimburse for the accommodation costs etc already paid. They could treat it like an interim claim, with an interim payment. It's understandable that not everyone is going to have the money or credit limit available to cover all costs up front so they should be prepared for that possibility surely. You don't really seem to be seeking any advice in your post and I know you've said that you just wanted to rant and fair enough. It must be very stressful, not to mention upsetting. I hope they're able to get booked on a flight home soon enough and that he continues to recover. |

I hope they can get home soon. I don't understand why the insurance company haven't sorted flights for them as they obviously missed the original flights due to him being seriously ill.

Sorry to hear about your SIL - glad to hear that he is out of the woods now but it must be frustrating that it hasn't been sorted out for him and your DD to come home.
As my Mom always says it doesn't matter how old you are, you are still my baby so I can understand that you don't want to leave them. You know that they will be ok so try not to worry too much (easier said than done). All the best to you all and hopefully you will all be home safe and sound soon.

A rant does a world of good!
How frightening for you all, but so glad to hear that he is recovering well, it sounds like trying to get flights sorted is really frustrating. I can totally understand why you don’t want to leave them there, I would be exactly the same. You’ll certainly have an interesting family story to relay to everyone round the dinner table once everything is back to normal. I hope everything is resolved smoothly for you, I can hear your frustration. Good luck x

We hadn’t thought of an interim payment. That’s worth pursuing I think. We will be able to leave them some cash for meals and incidentals. It’s the big expenditure that’s a bit more of an issue. If we could get the flight booked before we leave, we can put it on our card.

OP. How awful for you all especially your Son in Law but it does sound like he is on the mend now.
OK, surely the Insurer will arrange the flights for your Daughter and Son in Law as that's their responsibility. I know they did when my Son was hospitalised out there and I had to stay on with him. Best of luck however and hope things get sorted.

Why aren't the insurance co. getting them home, surely that's part of the medical expenses.

Sorry I have no idea how the insurance side of things work. I just wanted to say that I am so glad your son in law is on the mend. Sending you all hugs and I hope you are all home soon.

Just remembered. When I rang Axa to get the go ahead for medical expenses when my Son was admitted to Hospital they told me not to cancel our original flights home that we could no longer use. They did however want the Ref No's and said they would attempt to use or resell them as they then 'owned them'
