Very helpful post but only confirms that it will be staycations for us until some sort of normality returns. Don’t want to spend a holiday worrying “ what if”.

Thank you so much for this post. It is really helpful. Can I just ask about isolation being 10 days. At home it’s only 7 and in the USA it’s 5 obviously that is with the correct tests done. It it just because we are in another country that we have to do 10 days. I can’t find any information on this and I d been looking for ages!

One thing that I focus on is making sure I have phone numbers for anyone I might need to contact. Plus reference or booking no, working hours, UK/US numbers if different.

I keep a written/printed list in the hotel room safe and in my bag, plus saved as a doc on my phone, AND added to my phone contacts (with UK and US dialling codes) I include:

Airline
Long term car park at UK. Airport
Car hire company
Hotel
Travel Insurance co
GP
Bank
Credit Card co
Cattery
Neighbour
2 Family members

Maybe a bit “OTT” but I travel alone.

I am from Ireland and we are currently 10 days isolation. The USA have just reduced to 5 days. But there is no guarantee that just because the official advice in USA is 5 days, that you would actually be negative on day 5. Being prepared to stay for 10 days is just good planning.

Basically follow the official advice for the country you are currently in but be prepared to stay longer, as you need a negative result to return to UK / Ireland.

This is such a helpful post, we have updated our planning and made some contingency arrangements on the basis. Still hopeful we can go! Just got to avoid COVID between now and then!

This is great thanks.

It’s also become clear that you need an insurance company with a proper 24/7 365 day a year service.

Excellent thread - thanks

I have another one that's happening to me just now, but fortunately sorted.

Have a back up credit card or source of funds available to transfer in the case of main CC being blocked. Also the UK number for your CC handy and the means of making a cheap call back to uk to unblock it.

We're abroad just now and our Admiral Multicar renewed on 29th. I had an email saying they were unable to take payment, so I logged in to pay manually - saved card is blocked, so I used another. I should learn as this particular card gets blocked at the slightest thing and can be quite annoying. I only keep it for a certain points & hotel status.

I always contact the banks a few days before I travel and get them to put a note on my account that I will be going on holiday. Some I do on the phone, some I do through internet banking. That way you don't get in this situation

Anybody have any experience of how BA handle you if you have to stay longer to isolate if positive? Will they move your return flight to a later date?

Unless its Crapwest. We have tried this many times with Natwest and they always say they don't need to know, but then have always stopped the card when trying to use in the states - we longer bother with their card and use the Virgin credit card and have no problems.
