SORRY - just realised this reply is too long !

You are absolutely right to get money matters sorted well before you go, because when you are in Fla money really does MATTER !

Personally I take some cash but only up to the amount covered by my travel insurance (I vaguely remember it’s about £300 pp). I use it to leave a daily tip for housekeeping plus small things such as ice cream, coffee.

I use a credit card that doesn’t charge fees (mine is a Halifax Clarity but there’s quite a few that offer this nowadays). As I travel on my own I take a 2nd CC for back up or emergencies.

I’ve never used pre-paid money cards, but only because I’m used to using credit cards at home and away so I stick with what I know.

One thing I feel strongly about is I won’t use my bank debit card in the US. With it being linked to my main current account, all my money is at risk if the card is cloned, scammed etc. At least with a credit card the losses are the responsibility of the CC company, unless of course they can prove I was negligent or committed the fraud myself.

Lastly, please make sure you have access to emergency money just in case you have to stay longer or need medical treatment.

Hope this helps.

I always take some cash , credit card for the “just in case” and use Monzo. Like the fact I can see on the app straight away each transaction.

I got a revolut card last time I went, only put a bit of money on it and ended up loving it so much that it was the only card I used and I still use it here.
You can top it up before you go as and when you have money. Exchange the money to dollars when the interest rate suits. We changed some to dollars and left the rest in pounds. It will use the dollars first, and once they are gone use the pounds on that days interest rate - so you don't really lose. As long as you have internet connection you can top it up over there (I have topped up as I walked down the road, in the queue to pay for something - takes seconds).
It gives an immediate notification of transactions, then at the end up the day it listed all the transactions, so budgeting was very easy.
You have an app on your phone, you can turn all or part of the functions of the card off on the app (so turn on on-line spending only, or turn the whole card off)
You can even generate a one off disposable card for on-line purchases - great if you are not sure of the website.

Oh the revolut card sounds excellent. I like the fact that it is more secure for online spending too. I'm going to do some more research! Thanks!

You can have a second card linked to the same account. We chose to have a card each, just incase one account had any issues - you can transfer money between the accounts with the touch of a couple of buttons in the app
