I wrote a reply a few comments above.
Ours was an upgrade refund from the annual free cover for Europe for two adults to a world wide cover for the whole family. We upgraded in February this year.

Filled an online form on Nationwide beginning of July.

Not sure if this is similar to your situation.

I was offered a refund for my insurance, or they would just amend the dates for next year, so I did that

Hi,
Sounds the same free European upgraded to Worldwide bought in November 2019 ready for this September/October (now moved to end of next year)
Only difference I can think is I did over telephone but wouldn’t have thought that should make a difference.
Think I might try online. Thanks.👍

I followed a link from money saving expert but it looks like the list of insurance companies has changed as I can't see a nationwide link anymore.

and right at the bottom it says I haven't been able to use a policy upgrade due to COVID-19

Not sure if you have to go via Nationwide first but the If that doesn't work the direct link seems to be

You could always try writing to them to see if you get a different answer. The people on the phone are in sales and will go by what the policy wording says, which is you can't get a refund after 14 days. If you write a polite letter, the recipient may have more descretion as to whether they can pro-rata refund. It's worth a try for the cost of a stamp.

I got a refund of mine minus £20 admin fee. I emailed them asking for a refund as the FCO advised against travel and they said they’d refund.

I emailed our insurance company after our May trip was cancelled to ask about a refund not really expecting to get one but after a long wait for email back offering refund or transfer to new dates keeping the same t&C's (so covid would still be covered). Was v impressed! I think it just depends which company you're with.
