Thanks Tom, to be honest the small perks aren't the reason we are buying through Disney, my original query was mainly about Disney taking away the ability to book at places like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris etc. which is the main reason for us buying direct. Do you know if they have ever stopped providing acces to places mentioned?

Not to my knowledge sorry. My view was always about the place of purchase, namely SSR. Is that what I want? Yes it is. Can they take it away from me? No they can't
Everything else is and was a bonus. We were buying when the exchange rate was good, points were cheap and because of this we have 8 contracts bought direct from Disney. Also we have 1 resale one. There is no real right or wrong albeit the resale market does make financial sense. But that's not to say you are wrong to buy direct.

Check the points for Paris , Tokyo etx as they are very high. We funded our DLP trip by renting out points and making a cash booking which included tickets and a food package. A DVC booking would have been twice as many points and room only.and yes I believe they could remove those parks. I don't think they will. Buy you aren't guaranteed.

Bev has beat me to it. You can rent your points (via David's or similar all it takes is a couple of emails, it's a renters market, mine went in 2 hours) and use the cash . We had this discussion on the other thread so I won't go on about it again.
DVC is fantastic for use at DVC resorts. Anything else, do not buy for that reason as it simply is not financially worthwhile buying DVC for that. Never buy direct on the basis that you get perks (if you have to have them, a 25 point direct add on will do it). If you still decide to buy direct for other reasons, great, that is your choice. Also think about the irony of it - the disclaimer you sign says none of this is contractual and can be taken away any time and you agree this does not factor into your reason for buying.

Just to update people, we decided to go for it, contract returned and money transferred so we are now owners of DVC at VGF and very very happy to be part of the family.
Thanks all for your help and advise. |
