We've flown via Philly and Atlanta, both good transit airports.
Only use a US East coast stop, search for single stop with a duration <14 hrs, this along with land time can be set as options with Skyscanner. BA code share with AA or Delta will go via these hubs. Atlanta is Delta's home so they have lots of aircraft should there be a problem. We got through ATL in under 2 hours on the way out, on the return it's much quicker. On the outbound flight get seats near front for early disembarkation, make your toilet visits 20 mins before landing, then you've a better chance of being near the front of immigration. As it will be dinnertime at your connecting airport, use the time to grab a burger 'n fries then you're not hungry in Orlando which will also be later. The earliest flight I've seen to MCO is 18:30 which is AA via PHL. You also breeze through MCO having cleared immigration and security, saving at least an hour.

I find flights starting in an EU country to be the best prices (Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, Madrid etc)
You can fly from these to pick up the same flights from Gatwick but cheaper than just booking from gatwick

If you get an early flight in the U.K. you should arrive around tea time local even flying indirect.
We usually get ~10/11am flight from LHR and go for ~2hr layover somewhere (Atlanta for Virgin/Delta and Philly for BA/AA were both good hubs to transfer in). |

Definitely check out flying from DUB in that case the AA connections through Philadelphia, Charlotte or Chicago all work well.

I've done indirect twice. Via Atlanta and Via Toronto.
Definitely preferred Atlanta and they were better flight times . Think we were at the hotel around 5ish as we had time for dinner in DS before passing out in bed!

Following! This is a really helpful thread. We are considering indirect flights for the first time next summer. Am I understanding correctly you can clear US immigration in Dublin before even stepping foot on US soil?
