It is not allocate on arrival, but 'guaranteed' as Bev says. When they run low on certain categories, they change them to GTY (guaranteed) which means you are guaranteed to get that category or better on allocation.

Allocation can be anything up to 4 weeks before the cruise, but it will not be on the day.

There are pros and cons to GTY status .. the main pro is that you are more likely to receive an upgrade than if you had booked a specific cabin. The main con is that you have no recourse if you don't like where the cabin is. So if you end up opposite the laundry and people disturb you, you can't really make a song and dance about it (you could certainly ask the people to talk quieter though!)

We have done GTY on a few occasions and it's always been ok, we've been upgraded twice I think, one was a massive upgrade on the maiden voyage of the Disney dream .. I would never hold my breath for another like that though!

So, if you want a specific cabin, then book it (with or without a veranda), if you don't mind where you are - go for the GTY.

GTY is not available on all cruises or in all categories, but it is generally a little cheaper.

I'd personally ditch the veranda on a short cruise and book a specific cabin with oceanview.
