We are west coast first timers, flying into L.A. and out of San Fran with BA, sept/Oct 18, for 3 weeks. Have paid approx £550 each in economy which we were happy with, chose flight times based on aircraft so out on 787 and back a380. Also booked the car with Avis/ba.

Don't know if this may be of use to anyone going outside of the main summer holidays:

This is one example of fares that I tried from the link on the site:

We are also first timers, into SFO on 27/03/18 and out of LAX on 11/04/18. Booked through Delta and flying direct both ways LHR on a Dreamliner £575pp. we booked those around July of last year and the price has remained pretty constant ever since.

I don't know if its a good price or bad, but it certainly beats the hell out of a direct london-orlando return!

I would guess you will find Sept a little cheaper than that.

We’ve paid £345 each for a return MAN to SFO with Virgin. Flying out of LAX would have added £200 on top so I’ve just booked a cheap delta flight from LAX to SFO to pick up our return flight home. As they codeshare with Virgin our luggage with be sent all the way through to Manchester.

We did September/October last year, flying into SF and out of LAX. We hired a car from the start, but our hotel in SF had free parking and we didn't use the car much when we were there, other than for DH to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and down Russian Hill on Lombard Street. We flew with BA in Economy on the way out and PE on the way back, Glasgow-Heathrow-SF, LAX-Heathrow-Glasgow, for 19 nights - we were around £1650 for the 2 of us.

We drove to Pismo Beach for one night, Newport Beach for 7 nights, Las Vegas for 6 nights and Manhattan Beach for one night to be near the airport for our flight home. It was the most amazing holiday - I did a photo report if you want to have a look - not sure how to add a link, sorry. We'd never done the West Coast before and I got loads of information and help from this forum, as always the Dibb was the best.

I hope you enjoy the planning and have as fab a trip as we did.

Thank you for all of the replies they are really helpful. The flights are looking better than I thought I just need to look at overall cost for 2 of us for 16 nights. This trip was always planned for this year for both our birthdays but with our eldest son getting married in September and our youngest off to uni we have got an expensive year so it was put on the back burner. However still hopeful - you are only 50 once! 😃

Have a look at the Madonna Inn at St Luis Obispo and also its history/patronage. I am absolutely assured by friends that I will never, ever forget it (one way or the other).
