Our friends have villa in Formosa gardens, when we rented from them last time, the hire company for mums scooter told us to just leave out in porch when we ended our holiday, they were ok with it being left as it was not a risky area! We love it there. X

I live in a non gated community in the Formosa Gardens area. As you suggest there are many permanent residents and no real issues with security. Our HOA looked into adding a gate and could find no good reason to do so. It would have meant the HOA taking over responsibility for road maintenance and put up our bills dramatically without decreasing crime anyway.

IMO most gates are there to keep outsiders away from communal facilities like pools and provide a sense of security. Unless they are manned anyone can pretty much get past them anyway.

We’ve stayed at Indian Ridge and Indian Ridge Oaks, neither are gated and are close to Formosa Gardens, have never felt unsafe.

We've stayed in both. It's not a deal breaker for us either. As previous posters have said just about anyone could get if determined.

We do always put everything away/out of site in the pool area - don't leave swimwear or towels out drying. Close blinds, etc.

We've stayed in both and would consider both again based on the villa not whether it was a gated community or not.

We always lock doors, close blinds, set alarms when leaving and don't leave things out on obvious display.

The same precautions we use at home and we don't live in a gated community there either.

We have stayed on both. We prefer gated with a 24 hour manned booth. However, we are staying in an unmanned/gated community this year and I am not concerned. It's a nice bonus, but not essential.

I think Oak Island had cameras installed at the gate a few years back
it is true on many gated communities anyone can walk in if they try hard enough ...but need a car/van to take away all the goodies they steal!
Cameras monitor car tags so it s a deterrent as well as an aid to eventual capture
the Formosa Gardens area is lovely but thieves can operate anywhere so everybody should be careful..lock up and close blinds when out
