Our DD is sitting on 5 offers.

3 conditional and 2 unconditional. Both unconditional are totally unconditional (in that she can opt for them to be the insurance choice and if she misses the first one she is guaranteed a place at the unconditional institution)

Was going to choose the unconditional but Oxford offered a place so that is first choice (but requires AAA)

The conditional offer will be based on his results in August. If he accepts the offer as his firm place and he doesnt get the results needed they have until 31st August to decide whether to still offer him the place.

This favours the university who get to keep him hanging on until they've filtered through all the insurance and clearing applicants and may affect his accommodation choices.

The key word here is 'satisfying' offer conditions not 'accepting'. It is a conditional offer. The condition is he gets the grades required. If he doesn't the university gets to decide.

An update -mock results in and not as good as expected. Highly unlikely the grades will be achieved needed for 2 unis. Would anyone recommend accepting the unconditional offer offered?

It totally depends on the student .
An unconditional takes the pressure off , my daughter accepted one and then did much better than expected. She managed to get released from the unconditional and went through adjustment on results day . They were 2 of the most stressful days of my life !
Nothing is guaranteed, the Uni that has given the unconditional offer doesn’t have to release you .
I would say only accept the unconditional if you would be totally happy to go there .

My daughter took an unconditional offer but it was her first choice and she never considered that she would go anywhere else once she’d accepted it.

It depends if he definitely wants to go there or is settling for somewhere because it’s safe

Universities often accept one or even two dropped grades on results day* and there is plenty of time to improve on his mock results, especially with the incentive of higher grades needed for his firm choice, so I wouldn't dismiss the higher offers yet.

Only accept an unconditional choice if it really is the favourite out of the five offers but don't accept anything for now. Use the next three months before a choice has to be made to work hard to improve grades, go to the applicant days and see how he feels nearer the deadline.

* Outside of Oxbridge/LSE/Imperial, medicine/vet med and a few other highly competetive unis and degrees of course.

Does that mean he has until that date to accept?
That means he has to meet the conditions of the offer - that is, get the grades required as stated in the offer - by 31st August 2020. That's all. It's not about when he has to accept the offer.

(One could argue that if no date was given then the offer would remain open forever. So, in theory, without a date, the student could delay taking their exams for a couple of years then claim the offer still stands once they eventually got the grades required. By setting a date the University is saying the offer only applies to this year's exams).

If the unconditional offer is a true unconditional offer, then I would perhaps suggest putting it as the second/insurance option and accept a favoured conditional offer as the first option.

However, as already mentioned, there's no rush to make any decisions or accept any offers at the moment. Wait until the end of April and see how things go between now and then.

Just so I understand this correctly - so when your DS got his grades in August and they weren't as good as he hoped, he somehow contacted the university that had offered an unconditional offer (which he had rejected) and managed to get this unconditional offer reinstated?

That's interesting. DD has an unconditional offer but she's unsure whether to put it down as her insurance or to reject it.

Yes I find that interesting Ucas told us if you reject it you went onto clearing so DS put the conditional as him firm and unconditional as insurance. If we rejected then it was off to clearing On results day.
