We use Seagate external drives for each pc in our house. Around £50 on Amazon for 1tb (1,000 gb). That's roughly 17,000 hours of music , 130,000 books of 600 pages, 250 2 hour movies or 300,000 pictutes.

Please please please don’t make it the only home for your photos or important documents.
All hard drives can fail and external hard drives are more prone to fail as they get carried around / bumped / dropped etc. They are very useful but have another copy somewhere. Ideally in the cloud. I like google photos. You can store unlimited photos for free (reduced size but good enough) and you can set up your phone to save every photo you take automatically. |

I use WD Passport (Western Digital) around £42 at Curry's or on Amazon or WD themselves comes in several different colours & sizes so if you have more than one you an ID it by colour. Excellent little gadget and you can get a hard case for it.

If you are going to buy an external hard drive I’d recommend getting a SSD one they are more expensive but are a lot more reliable.

Have you thought about cloud storage? I store everything in the cloud now. If relying on external hard drives I would buy 2 from different brands, and keep an eye of changes to file types etc.

I use Amazon Photos and pay £16.99 a year. I use Apple cloud 79p a month. Microsoft Office 365 family option is £79.99 a year and gets you access to all the programmes like Excel, Word etc. I have a OneDrive through Microsoft that I don’t pay for via my email account but not sure of the limit as I don’t heavily use to.
Google Drive is another too. |
