Australia 2022
Well with our trip to Florida in April this year well and truly scuppered DW and I have decided to go big(ish) and head for Australia in March 2022. We are planning on Sydney than flying down to Melbourne then driving back via Canberra. Has anyone done something similar ? Looking for ideas where to stop off on the way back and intend in taking 7 days to get from Melbourne to Canberra.

Will follow your post with interest. We were hoping to head to Australia next summer. Realistically now with Covid, we will plan for Summer 2022. Enjoy your trip planning.

Yep 2022 we are planing Australia coast to coast,by luxury train well I’ve always wanted To go on the orient express
We are looking at hop,on hop,off staying in hotels with facilities ie laundry service the option of apartments with 4/5 days to explore destinations We’d actually planned at 7 month round the world tour for 20 20,but had to really alter it so did Europe stop Edinburgh Dublin then San Fran Hawaii Texas then Florida well you al know why We are reluctant to book much right now to go the other way then end back at our/home in Florida But it on the upside let us do some other places on the way to Australia |

We did a similar trip 18 years ago. Over 3 weeks using internal flights . It was cheap then as it was after 9/11 and the airlines wanted to get you flying again ,so you maybe lucky post covid !
We flew to sydney had 1 night there then flew to Brisbane for 4 nights, took in Warner bros studios, lone pine koala sanctuary, the gold coast and general sightseeing.then Cairns for 3 nights ,went to the tangaluma wrecks, rainforest, tjabukai aboriginal centre and scuba on great barrier reef. Then we flew to ayres rock watched sunrise over uluru and had 1 night there. 1 in kings canyon did a helicopter flight over the canyon, and 1 in Alice springs, visiting the flying doctor and school of the air . Then flew to Melbourne and picked up a motor home, took in the grand prix , then drove back to Sydney over 6 days and stopped somewhere each night. Kangaroos coming to the camper for breakfast. Back in Sydney we had 4 nights there and the whole trip was fabulous Do it ... you'll have a ball |

We are planning a visit in 2022 for my partners big 5-0 birthday, they have friends there and it is a 5 days or so visit to see them and the area they live in. It will be part of a bigger trip to cover Singapore, Tokyo and possibly (i can swing it) Hong Kong too.

I would love another big Australia trip, this time non stop to Perth across to Adelaide, Ocean Rd, Melbourne, Tasmania and a few bits in between. Feel we have done Sydney and the northern areas loved the Kimberley and central areas.
Waiting until pandemic has passed and will then plan. Already have an Australia file open of things to do. Have fun |

DH and I had a trip over new year. DD was working in Adelaide for 2 years. Had 11 nights in Adelaide and 3 nights in Sydney. Loved Adelaide, couple of trips to the wine valleys. Blended our own bottles at Penfolds. Visited a wildlife park, handled a koala which was amazing, fed kangaroos, beach, some amazing meals including dinner at Sashi who won Australia masterchef, deep sea fishing, cricket on New Year’s Eve followed by fireworks on the beach. Then on to Sydney. Bridge climb, boat trip, an evening at the Sydney Opera house, a city walking tour. Best meal of our holiday was Mr Wong’s in Sydney. Really wanted to do the Blue Mountains but we were there when there were the bushfires so wasn’t an option.

We did the opposite and drove from Sydney to Melbourne via the coast road and headed inland to Kosciuszko National Park rather than to Canberra. You can hire mountain bikes here during the summer (it's a ski resort in the winter)
Had a lovely stay in Merimbula, Pebbly Beach was nice and had lots of wild kangaroos around the car park - there are some short circular bush walks there and there's a blow hole at Kiama. Lakes Entrance and Ninety Mile beach is also worth a visit.. We took 7 nights to do the trip but had several nights in one place to ease the driving and do more exploring. |

DW and I have discussed some options, the favourite so far is Fly into Sydney for 6 nights, fly up to Brisbane for 4 nights then fly up to Cairns for 5/6 nights. We'll use each stop as a base to take trips into the countryside rather than drive through it. Really liking the look of Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef as I'm into all things aquatic.

If you are in Sydney for a few days definately try to get out to the Blue Mountains, they are stunning. Hunter Valley is another great day trip, just don't offer to be designated driver for the day
Brisbane - Surfers paradise in the Gold Coast and Byron Bay just down the coast are in easy reach. Gold Coast is about a 4 hour drive south. Both ok, but we preferred the more natural beaches up North. Loved Port Macquarie, but may be too far for you to drive South from Brissy or North from Sydney. Airlie Beach is a great stop off for the whitsundays and at the Southern tip of the barrier reef, lots of islands to explore.. Cairns - I'd personally stay here over Brisbane if you are short on time. Cape Tribulation rainforest is lovely, make sure you get out to Daintree and a trip up to Kuranda is well worth while. Personally opt for the cable car over the train as the latter takes ages and we needed a taxi to get back to town. Port Douglas preferred over Cairns for accommodation, just more relaxed vibe. Got to spend a very happy Rugby World Cup match night here with jugs of VB If you are into aquatic a trip out to Green Island for some snorkelling is good. Sad to see a lot of coral had died off last time we went out though. If you get the opportunity, getting a PADI qualification before you go will give you the option to dive on the reef as a qualified diver rather than a shallower buddy dive. Lots of daily dive boats leave from both Cairns and Port Douglas. You should be out of Box jellyfish season (I think) so you won't have to don the very sexy blue jelly fish suits! Aus is an amazing place to visit and experience. Edited at 10:47 PM. |
