Epcot and Animal Kingdom it's not worth bothering. MK it's difficult as not being able to choose your time meant working around the lightning lanes. We ended up with a 1:30 jungle cruise after trying to get a 9:30 slot during the 7:30am madness. So we maybe got 4 rides that day using genie + compared to standby.
Fastpass/MaxPass at Disneyland used to get us far more rides per day when used alongside standby.
It's frustrating and possibly as a single traveller it won't be a problem waiting in the standby lines as it not like having anyone moaning at you, so it's just about what you can personally take.
I'd recommend using either genie+ or buying Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood studios as theres a few big rides with long waits then shows/star tours to fill in the time while waiting for your LL reservation.

When can you buy Genie+

I heard somewhere you can only buy Genie+ on the day. Is this correct?

If so at what time? Do you have to wait until 7 am to purchase, and risk missing the opportunity to get a popular ride booked at 7am?

You can buy it at midnight on the day. Then you wake up at 7am and book.
