I am surprised that you lost prepaid Genie+, this isn’t allowed anymore, but it was never an on-site benefit even when it was. But I also don’t understand why it was a new booking, or why you were able to change your friend’s booking, they don’t usually talk to me when I have DH down as the lead passenger and I am in the room.

I’m down as contact on both bookings
I don’t understand why it had to be a new booking either
The cost difference with riverside is only a few hundred but if I got the genie back I’d go for it

You can only ask but to be honest it sounds like they’ve already made the change. If you’d switched to another Disney resort at the time they may have been able to keep it.
Really none of us can answer whether you should have Genie plus or not, or even whether Disney will give it back as this is such a new thing that’s already been changed since they introduced it. I think you need to call Disney and explain the situation and see what they can do for you.
