Sights,Bites,Maltese Delights. Malta Sept 2021. Day 1. It’s Best in the Westin.

Am struggling on the snappy titles for this one !

Wednesday 29 September

Didnt have a great nights sleep - even tho beds super comfy and hotel very quiet

Woke up at 4, 5, 7 and finally at just after 8

In my tired state, I incurred the first of many stubbed toes on the bathroom door stop - ouch.

Actually , I had got off to a flying start yesterday- as you walk in from the terrace there is a tiny lip on the step - I was so busy eyeing up the desserts in front of me I missed the lip and almost tripped up so I did that awkward thing of managing to recover and sashaying off like nothing had happened knowing full well I had just narrowly avoided face planting myself into the very desserts i had been eyeing up.

It has been reassuring to see almost everyone else doing exactly the same while I have been here - so I conclude its a design flaw and wasnt down to the daiquiri

I digress, stubbed toe aside, we had the first holiday morning coffee on the balcony taking in the glorious sea view. The pool was already a bit busy.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and was buffet style in the large terrace restaurant

I confess I have to warm up to buffet meals - always takes me a few days to find my way round and this was no exception as it was incredibly busy.

We had to queue to get in !

It was very noisy and the buffet was arrranged over three rooms - so a complete faff as one room had the toast machine, another had the cold meats, the other the cereals and fruit and the hot station helpfully spanning all three ..

The “fruit” room

Lots of going back and forth and by the time you had collected everything , the first thing you got was probably going cold.

It felt a bit hard work and my first day effort was so feeble there is no pic. I did up my buffet game after a few days though.

Some of it was slow - having just one person operating the toaster whilst also dishing out the bread rolls created quite a queue . Everything was handed to you . The only self service items were the cereal boxes and fresh fruit counter.

There was certainly plenty to choose from.

From breakfast, we went straight out to the pool - there were still spaces around the main pool

but we could see the reef area by the sea was already fully occupied - and people must have been up early bagging these spots.

We spent the next few hours just chilling, catching up on sleep, and enjoying being away.

Cocktail o clock came round just after midday and I had a raspberry mojito

I tried out the pool - wow it was COLD - really COLD 🥶 I usually like to swim each day if I can on holiday but think that’s a bit unlikely here. You couldnt even say it warmed up once you we’re in. It was just plain cold !

Mid afternoon we had some snacks - Samosas, mini bruschette and a bowl of pasta.

Hmm, not such a light snack actually ..

It was very delicious washed down with a beer and very refreshing Apple and Lime Margarita.

Felt reasonably priced at 41E for that lot.

Late afternoon we went back to the room and got changed, making our way out for the sundowners again (there is an emerging theme you will see of us moving slowly from one grazing venue to another this holiday) .

Canapes this evening were served with a hoisin dip

Chicken and Bacon
Creamy Cheese Ball ( like deep fried dairylea)
Noodly thing
Mushroom vol au vent ( very 1970s)
Pulled pork nugget

They were a nice, if slightly curious, collection.

It suddenly came on to rain and we ran indoors, along with everyone who had been eating out on the terrace so the lounge bar was packed out and quite a few people were getting antsy about the wait for a table .

We managed to bag a sofa seat and played some more cards until it quietened down.

I had a very nice Singapore Sling

and we shared some chicken tacos.

These were mighty delicious

and very filling. The hotel food so far has been excellent.

Rounded off with a Paris Brest that was so light it was like angel food - or angel delight even

Again, a very reasonable bill

Who knows, tomorrow we may even set foot outside the hotel

It was so nice. It felt a bit unreal being away and so weird not sightseeing or shopping on day one
