Food on cruises
We are looking at booking our first cruise , looking at Southampton on the IONA . In general what is the food like on these cruises ? My hubby is so picky with food and worries he won't find anything he likes

Not been on the Iona yet but we have been on the azura twice and going on ventura soon and Iona next year.
I’m picky too but I do try to have a go of new foods in the main dining room or the buffet. If you go on there website there is sample menus. The only thing I don’t like is I find the food dated. I don’t like liver and pate which seems to be on the menu a lot. But I’ve never gone hungry. We had some lovely meals last time we went on a weeks crusie. |

We've not cruised P&O (although we will soon) but have cruised Carnival, RCI and Princess - each three times.
I'll eat almost anything but Joan doesn't like spicy food and also has a serious allergy to onions. On most of these cruises we've been able to see the dinner menu quite a few hours in advance so we can see if anything is suitable. Failing that there's always the buffet restaurants on every ship where you can usually eat all day with loads of choice. You won't get any specific Iona food reviews yet though as her maiden voyage is not until May Mick

Nobody is as fussy as my husband (will eat spag Bol but no other pasta dishes or shapes) but P and O had fantastic choices. There will be something he eats I’m sure. That’s always hubby’s worry that he won’t eat but has never struggled. There’s usually always pizza/burgers/pasta of some sort each night.

I've not cruised on P&O but I went on a Marella cruise and the choice of food was fantastic. The menu's for the main dining rooms changed daily and could be viewed on screens throughout the day and you could just turn up rather than needing to book, there were some less formal restaurants (not that Marella are formal) and the buffet restaurant. There were also some (possibly 4) speciality restaurants that were available for a reasonable supplement, we went to the steak one and the food and service were top notch.
Cruises are well known to have amazing food and service to match. If your hubby doesn't like his main course I doubt the staff would even bat an eyelid and would be more than happy to get him something else. Or, he could go to the buffet after to fill up! |

We've done 2 with P&O and are booked on Iona for the end of October.
We find there is always SOMETHING you like and always something you REALLY like. We find the food in the MDR is great - they change the menu every night plus have the same staples each night - usually a steak/chicken and a veggie dish. We find the buffets have a great choice and if something is running low of not out then just ask. IF they have it they'lll get it for you. The speciality restaurants are also fabulous - they usually do a 2 menu rotation so check which is being offered the night you want to go. Usually a quiet word and they will get something different for you. Our top tip for eating in the buffet is to take something with you to leave on the table - a book/scarf etc. Get your drinks first. Then once you have your table you can both go and get food, rather than one staying at the table and one going off to get food. That way you stand more chance of eating together! There might me a night when there isn't much you fancy but that won't happen often. Those nights I just stock up on cheese and biscuits! Enjoy x x |

My mum is quite fussy, we took her with us on last years cruise, she managed fine. She did eat mostly in the buffet, as there seemed to be more there that she liked, but she certainly never went hungry. Mum and I are on the Iona in December 😁

I think you will be amazed at the variety and volume of different foods provided also the crew are very good at catering to special dietary requirements or adapting meals to suit, I know most cruise lines have set things on the daily menu, i.e. chicken breast, baked potato etc. Usually at the bottom of the menu. (Or ask for kids menu?)
Come back and let us know how it goes!

Cruising is ideal for fussy eaters! The beauty of the all inclusive nature is that you can order something you're unsure of and if you really don't like it, they will happily do you something else instead - don't be afraid to ask! I'm sure that P&O probably still offer the option of plain chicken and/or steak at most meals, or will adapt what is on the menu slightly if needs be. If all else fails, you can simply take a trip to the buffet where staples like pizza and pasta will be available. I actually think it would be a challenge to find someone who likes none of the food on a cruise - the variety is so wide.
