Which 1970's Book Series Can't I Remember
OK here goes.
One of my highlights of my childhood from about the age of 7 to 14 was to go on a Saturday afternoon to my local bookshop with my pocket money to buy a book. I used to love looking at the carousels in the news agents and choose the next book to read. In the early days it was of course the Secret Seven and then Famous Five. I loved the Jennings and Derbishire books. Was desperate to go to board school. I moved on to the Three Investigators. They were all on paperback and used to cost in my memory around 3 and 7. Decimalisation happened when books were priced in both old and new money and then moved just to new. So far so good. However, what I can't remember is a series of books which I started to read but have no idea what they were called or who wrote them. What I can remember is this. They were British. They involved a group of children who aged as the books progressed. By the time I stopped reading them a couple of the children has started a relationship (it was the 70's they kissed). They were mystery/adventure stories in the vein of Famous Five but for a slightly older audience. Now it gets a bit odder. I do remember that the printing and book were different from other books. Different typeface perhaps or different quality of paper. For the life of me I cannot remember what they were. I do know that if someone mentions them I will remember them. I never did finish the series, I grew older than the characters in them. Long shot but help! |

No idea but thank you for mentioning the Three Investigators. That was where I learned the word 'stocky' (one of the characters was often described as 'stocky' meaning, I guess, that he was a big lad!)
I don't recall any romance in the 'Adventure' series (Island of Adventure etc) - those were the ones where the widowed mum married a guy who was a spy, and one of the characters had a parrot. I started school the year of decimalisation so I'm a bit behind you, but I was a voracious reader. You've got me thinking now!
