that day in LA sounds perfect for us
We stayed at The Tangerine in Burbank which suited us as there was just the 2 of us. Not sure how big your party is or if they do family rooms if you need one. Lots of places to eat nearby and it was a nice neighbourhood to walk around. The Mexican place next door was good and Big Bobs burgers! The Day in LA tour was great - we got on at Hollywood and then when we got to Santa Monica we were allocated our bus for the day. At the end we asked to stay on to Santa Monica so we could spend the evening there.

Sure, that would work. I would stay in Hollywood so you can take the metro to Universal and to Santa Monica by changing lines in downtown.
