I would say that is a wise decision. The cable car turnaround at Market Street is not far from the rental car dropoff (which is actually a multi-storey car park). Although it is only a mile there is a very steep hill between O'Farrell and Fishermens Wharf.

For the airport journey you can get the Super Shuttle shared van for $15 per person on Expedia. If there are 4 or more in your party (in other words $60+) then a taxi seemingly works out slightly less expensive.

Everyone I have spoken to that has visited SF has said that you do not need a car because everything is just there!

Fell much happier about this now...

Just to say that it depends which company you're with but we booked with Dollar via USrentacar and they arranged for us to drop our car off at the Ramada right in Fishermans Wharf rather than O'Farrell St. It might be easier to do that - there was no difference in the price. Also, depending on how many are in your party, if the transfers as $15 a pop you might want to consider a one way one day rental - we're paying £35 for an imtermediate car for one day to get us from Fishermans Wharf to the airport. Again we're collecting this from the Ramada. Just for your info!

Thanks for the info people... I will ask at the hotel desk when we get there at what transfers they think will be best...

$30 but never mind.
O'Farrell Street, is it really a mile from FW, it won't feel like it, it seems more like 100 yards.

There are multi-story covered parking garages charging $30 ( including tax ) per 24 hours, the nicest one is attached to the Westfield shopping centre.
Must admit some of the open lots, often with plenty of broken glass on the ground, charge more like $40. Probably they are OK but some people leave stuff in their cars so obviously it ain't there when they get back.
Point being I suppose, often with self-parking / valet parking, where the car ends up is exactly the same, but its almost always better to pay directly with the car park, rather than through the hotel, unless you have an offer.

We've stayed at the Chancellor twice now the most recent in April when we stayed 8 nights. If you email Wes Tyler, the General Manager and ask for a room near the top its queiter. The first time we stayed it was my 50th birthday and the second our 25th wedding anniversary and both times he put us on the top floor in the suite overlooking the Union Square and gave us a bottle of wine. And you also get a little rubber duck in the bathroom as a momento of your stay, very cute; I cant fault the hotel for the price we paid and the staff are most helpful. They also have free coffee and cookies which are to die for in reception all day.
