I'd also recommend the Alcatraz night tour which was just fabulous. Places sell out quickly so be on the ball if you want to do it
Yes it's def one I'm going to book! As like you say you are only in SF for such a short time and need someone to show you around!
What is diff with regards to day/night tour? We are def gonna do this too but don't know which!

We are just back a couple of weeks. We stayed on Lombard St but if I was to choose one over the other I would opt for FW over Union Square.
We did the Behind The Scenes Alcatraz tour and it was fantastic. I would definitely recommend

You'll love Dylan's! The view from the Marin headlands...

The night tour at Alcatraz includes parts of it which aren't open during the day - for example the hospital wing. There are also talks given by guides on specific aspects which are so interesting. One we did was about the moon and we all went outside to see the moon rising over SF. Incredible! We got the ferry across during the daylight, watched the sun set while we were touring (the audio tour is brilliant), did some of the extra talks and then got the ferry back in the dark. It was so interesting to see the rock in both lights. Plus the night tour just makes the whole thing seem even more eerie. It's well worth the bit extra that it costs in my opinion.

Super excited now
TBH I know we are doing Alcatraz and as the tickets don't go on sale for quite awhile it's something I've not researched much about. I thought the ticket inc Alcatraz and ferry so does that not determine what time you get on the ferry? I thought it was time slots?

Yes it is timed slots. You get a specific ferry out to the rock but it’ll probably be daylight (we went in March). We then had a choice of 2 to return on and we chose the last one. It was dark and chilly so take some layers!

Highly recommend booking on the day they release Alcatraz tickets - 90 days in advance as they sell fast for the popular slots - the night tour gets snapped up - only managed the day but would love to go at night must be very atmospheric. We stayed in a variety of locations in SF - in Union Square and FW and much prefer the Wharf area - so much to do at night without venturing far - easier with children at FW

Another fan of the Alcatraz night tour, we have also been during the day but preferred the evening visit.

I guess it depends on your priorities. We only paid £440 for 3 nights including free parking and free breakfast. It was about a 2 mile walk to FW but we both enjoy walking and walked there and back each day (we got an Uber the night we went to Alcatraz). I couldn't justify the extra £400 upwards to stay in FW.
The Behind the scene tour started about 4pm and joined up with the night time tour later on.
