Advice wanted for first time trip

Always wanted to visit California, not too worried about including Vegas but want to see GCanyon and the national parks.

Are there places to stay in the parks apart from ?also I imagine the heat is pretty intense during July/August - anyone from UK been there during UK summer school hols?

I hear Santa Barbara is a nice area to visit also.

Something to bear in mind that if you do decide to stay in National Parks accommodation, make sure you book well in advance. I priced up an itinerary for an aborted trip for last year which was going to include Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP. Most of the accommodation in the park was gone, or if not, hugely expensive...as was standard motels just outside the parks ($200+ per night for a Days Inn).

Heat will obviously be an issue, but you can work round that with early starts or late afternoon hikes.

I've always wanted to go to the national parks in Utah and Arizona and pop over into California, so I'll be tagging along on this thread
I hope to do one more Orlando holiday next summer for the kids then start saving for the big west trip!

The heat can be very intense. It was the end of June when we visited the Grand Canyon and it was 140 degrees F. Have never felt heat like it.
