Alot of it comes down to personal taste... take the Excalibur for example..we stayed there with the kids in 2004 and it was fine we really liked it..

I looked round it last yr and again last month and i'd hate to stop there now... the rooms might have been renovated but the rest is in desperate need of a overhaul.. the food court area is really grubby... i just find the whole hotel pretty dark and depressing now.

I've stopped in the Flamingo twice.. location is very central.. the hotel casino / restuartants/ food court areas are very nice and i believe the GO rooms are lovely.. but the room we had last yr was very tired.. bedding etc was clean but the carpets/ curtains and decor had seen better days.

I guess you just get a feel for the place.. we went in the Imperial Palace a few years ago and i thought it was terrible... yet as soon as we walked into the Tropicana this yr i knew we'd love it.. the lobby is light and airy and the rooms spotless... We had a good walk round everywhere and couldnt fault it (but then its just been renovated so should be spotless).

We really like the Stratosphere its just the rubbish location.. if you could pick it up and move it up the strip we'd stop there.

What about the flamingo? We stayed there last year and although it doesn't get the best reviews on trip adviser we loved it basically just for the location, it's almost straight across the road from the ballagio! Yes the rooms are getting tired looking but we only needed the hotel to sleep in so it done us. The way we look at it is for the amount of time you spend in the room we'd rather have the extra spending money

We stayed at Vdara in January for our wedding/ honeymoon and could not fault it. We fell in love with Bellagio and spent a lot of time there including our wedding meal. It is a short walk through a covered walkway between the hotels.
We would definitely stay at Vdara again. Our suite was great and we had an amazing view of the fountains and Paris. Just ask for a high floor on the Bellagio side. I'd say if we could get a good deal staying at Bellagio we would but if not Vdara is worth looking at.

We stayed at the Bellagio on our last trip and to me it was worth every penny. When we go away I like a bit of luxury, it is what we work so hard for throughout the year, but I know to some it is just a bed. I would recommend it in a heartbeat and we thought long and hard this time about where to stay, because we thought we might have been spoilt last time, but we went for the Cosmopolitan in the end. I'll let you know what it's like in about 12 hours!

Ooo, too many choices, a big Thank you for all your replies I have just had a quote off the BA site for 7 nights at the Monte Carlo for £2076 including resort fees, which seems very good to me, the flight alone on the BA site is £1700?

Can I just give a little advice before I go into recommendations? There is an ongoing debate on here about location - I shall give my views from the experience of 13 previous visits to Las Vegas. There are reeally only two 'areas' on the Strip now - Central (which includes Ceasars, Mirage, Bellagio, Flamingo, Venetian, Wynn etc) and South (which includes MGM Grand, NYNY, Excalinur, Mandalay Bay, Luxor etc). There are a few inbetweenies - like Planet Hollywood, City Centre etc, which are really equi-distant. The important thing to understand is that Mandalay Bay (the furthest south) is as far from Encore (the furthest north) as Encore is from Mandalay Bay! I know that sounds obvious but, honestly, you'd think it wasn't the case sometimes. I don't include Circus Circus or Riviera in this - because, quite frankly, they really are only places you'd visit if you stayed there. And the Stratosphere and Downtown are slightly closer to the Central area - but you'll need transport to get there so it really doesn't figure, because you wouldn't be walking to them? If you go by car, taxi or Deuce bus, the difference is minutes. What I'm saying is - the location of your choice, whether Central or South Strip, is really irrelelevant, as you're pretty much as close to all the attractions from any of those hotels. I hope this helps?

Right - I've stayed in the 5* swanky places (The Palazzo and TheHotel at Mandalay Bay, for instance) and they are superb. And worth every penny. I've stayed in the not-quite-so-opulent (Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, Flamingo, Ballys, etc etc) and they all have good points too. And I've stayed at Circus Circus too, more than once, and it did its job! But my advice would be - if you want to stay in a real top end place, The Palazzo/Venetian give the extra comfort of a suite for the same price, or less, than the Bellagio. And it is a difference - an extra 200 sq feet, for the basic room/suite. I personally would always choose the suites over The Bellagio rooms - but I concede you don't get the fountains. For a 'middle' choice, I always refer people back to the MGM Grand - it's standard rooms are the biggest on The Strip (bigger than at Caesars Palace, for instance) it has a great pool area, 31 different eateries (including a fine buffet), and the staff are unfailingly helpful. And that counts for alot in my view. I'd certainly never knock The Flamingo, which can be incredibly cheap to stay at, and you can even get views of The Strip/The Fountains at no extra cost. So there's my top, middle and bottom opinion!

We only paid £1000 for 2 of us at the luxor over new year including flights! We were hardly in our hotel, but it was great anyway the only thing was that it was at one end of the strip but as the ones in the centre are pricier I'd stay there again! no way would I spend a fortune on a hotel room I only slept in, and we were out from 9.00 am - 11.00pm everyday!
