we are waiting to buy our currency, how can you tell if it's about to go down or is it just pure luck?

A good guide is to check you financial page in the newspaper. If the dollar moved yesterday (up or down) then the tourist rate will move today. But shop around. I found that the Co-Op travel service in Bolton was offering 2 cents less to the £ than the same company in Bury. We bought ours some time ago and got $2 to the £. Thomas Cook had an offer one weekend for deals of £1000.

I keep track of the dollar on the BBC site here,

news.bbc/2/hi/business/default.stm

Click on the above and then click on 'Marketwatch ticker' on the right of the screen, this will bring up a new window. Then click on 'Sterling - US Dollar' to see how the dollar is doing today and how it has been doing for the last 3 months. This shows the business rate and not the tourist rate which will be lower.
