I am a bit confused. I have tried and can not do it, I have a Panasonic Lumix Tz18 point and shoot, how can I get this affect? thanks

with a point and shoot where you cant select the aperture setting the best way to get back ground blur is described in the cars post above
the best way to get background blur with a point and shoot is to make sure you have a bit of distance between the subject and the background then move back as far from the subject as you can and then zoom right in and focus on the subject, you should get a good effect with the 16X zoom on the TZ18 |

Join the club, I have a Panasonic FZ-28 and I have tried with an aperture of F2.8 & F4 & F6 but still no joy ?

a shallow depth of field or a blurred background is hard to do with point and shoots but not impossible for some reason even using F/2.8 on a point and shoot gives a large depth of field and very little image blur as you have found out try and set up a shot outside where you can get some distance between you and the subject and some distance between the subject and the background, set the camera to F/2.8 and around 28mm focal length take your shot then move back to around 10 X zoom or 280mm still using F/2.8 and take the same shot again, compare the two shots and see if that makes any difference |
