POBS (bread and milk)

My aunt used to make me this when I was a child. I know a lot of people turn their nose up at the thought of it but I loved it. My aunt always told me that it is much nicer if you cook it in a pan (she said to break down the starch in the bread) rather than just pouring hot milk over and soaking the bread as recipes on the internet show. Anyone else like this dish? Or am I just odd? I’ve just had a bowlful for the first time in about 30 years and I really enjoyed it.

Basically bread and milk in a pan cooked the same way as porridge oats. Usually with sugar but I prefer without. That’s the way I make it however often people just pour hot milk over bread and sugar. I presume it was a poor person’s recipe and it seems to be out of favour these days but I really enjoy it.

Goodness, that takes me to living with my Gran for a while, she used to make it every night for me at bedtime. I don't know why but I seem to remember she lightly buttered the bread.

I might give it a go with the bread buttered.

Yes I think I am strange liking it. I do only like it if the bread has been cooked though rather than just having had hot milk poured over it.

My mam loved this , cooked it all in the pan with buttered bread. I thought it was disgusting thankfullyI didn’t have to eat it. Think she got used to it when she was evacuated

Pobs was always Friday night supper when I stayed over at my grandparents. She used to cook it on the hob with a little bit of brown sugar and always gave it to me in a cup with a spoon to eat. Delicious. I haven’t had it in about 40 years!
