The Japanese PM said on Friday that they have no immediate plans to reopen to tourists - commentators cannot see it until the summer elections are over...

Ironically, my partner lost his First Class seat home last week due to a change of plane, I called up and asked him to be moved to Business, which they did last night. So in a on-line chat with Virgin to get them to re-issue the ticket.

With it being 99.9% certain will not be going, feel bit daft doing it but...

I have been reading your reports about Japan, as I had planned to go this year, but probably next (fingers crossed)! I am sorry to hear that you are cancelling your trip, but you are probably right that it will not open till after their general election. They will go at their own rate and we will have to be patient!

Yes saw a newspaper report on how Japan has no immediate plans to reopen to tourists.

I'm still hoping for August/September/October this year but not going to be booking anything until a month before at the earliest, probably... That being said, I am mildly concerned about it being incredibly crowded the moment Japan reopens to tourism, as I know a lot of people who are just waiting for Japan to reopen to book holidays there! (Japan is a very popular tourist destination where I am...)

Done - all cancelled bar my paid flight with ANA which I will call them to cancel in the morning.

Partners reward flight cancelled
Hotels cancelled
Airport parking cancelled
Portable wi-fi device cancelled

We have our week at the end of October to plan for now, or see if can extend to 2 weeks, or keep as a week and plan for 2 weeks next May - got ages to decided.

Instead?
3 nights in London
6 nights in Malmo / Copenhagen
1 night in Blackpool to see friends and family.

Not as upset as thought I would be, sort of relieved it is not hanging over us.

Onwards!

Glad you're sorted and at least you still have something planned for that time

FYI - I ended up paying NO FEES to cancel my paid flight.

They had changed the flight home by an hour (it had changed many times over the months!) but by fluke I had not accepted the change in the ANA app - so they said they would waive the cancellation fee.

Virgin also waived the £30 cancellation fee as the booking had been downgraded from First to Business (well yes it had, but weeks ago!) so all in all it went better than I thought it might.

Just to wait for the money to come back to the credit card.
