Sardinia…

Just back from a few days in Italy, Lake Garda, and think we need to spread our wings a little more and find some new destinations as we have become real creatures of habit.

I have discovered Ryanair fly to Sardinia from our local airport but don’t know where to start in doing my homework.

The clear water beaches and white sand are appealing, are these accessible to tourists who may not have car hire, also how expensive a destination is Sardinia.

Thank You

Hi there, I have been to Sardinia multiple times, it is truly beautiful. However, I think you will struggle without a car. Public transport is not that great and the island is surprisingly big - about the size of Wales. Each time we have been we have flown into Olbia, picked up a car and made our way over to the West of the island as we generally rent a house there. We have also done split stays with a week on the west coast and a week on the east coast.

The Costa Smerelda is expensive and home to the millionaire’s and their super-yachts. Hotels and restaurants are more expensive here too.

i am sure many have visited without a car but I really think you will be restricted and miss so much of what Sardinia offers. I think there are a couple of Tripadvisor threads on this which may be worth checking out. It is our favourite place in the med, stunning, largely unspoilt and welcoming. I am sure you will love it

Also, like anywhere, it can range from hugely expensive to very reasonable depending on your choice of accommodation and how you holiday. We always do it more budget friendly but car hire does push the price up.

What airport would you be flying in to? There are 3 main ones and that may determine where you base yourself. The beaches on the east cost around Cala Gonone are spectacular and many can only be reached by boat but the sand isn’t soft, its quite grainy. The beaches are unspoilt and well worth a visit though. We visited them on a boat trip and would highly recommend. For softer sand, have a look at these:

You cant go far wrong with any of the coastal areas, there will be something for everyone for sure.

My cousin lives there but as it’s not near Olbia flights are complicated as the other airports are hard to get to for us and involve travel and hotels either end so a quick trip is difficult. Ryanair used to be good but they don’t fly from our area any more. Sardinia is lovely but not an easy place to get around away from the main tourist areas.
