To qualify my previous remark, I think there is merit in examining the concept of a UBI, as some are doing. I just think that this country is nowhere near ready to accept the idea and no party with a chance of governing is ready to put it forward as policy.

I don’t disagree about the robots. But not convinced one off payments are the way forward.

If it’s a system to fund start up businesses / self employment then that makes more sense. But here’s £10k, go on holiday or splash out doesn’t make any sense to me.

Fully agree it's too early but a long term plan has to be examined.

The problem is that not everyone has the skills or ideas to start a business and if you automate out of employment a sizeable chunk of the workforce you have to come up with a solution. Whether UBI is it is part of the debate.

It is all tied together with the debate about UBI, which is what the BBC article goes on to discuss.

Thing is this is moving really fast and companies will cotton on before government catches up. The basic idea of UBI is good if you want to replace a job with automation you have to pay a hefty tax after all why should the companies get all the benefits from no workforce. However companies argue that it's a job shift to IT and programming.

I've explained to my son until I'm blue in the face if he doesn't start learning code now he will regret it.

Even lawyers for insurance companies are not safe.

UBI would save the government 1000s of civil servant jobs in HMRC and benefits places up and down the country.

I don’t understand it myself but the article implies anyone could claim two £5k payments if they had ‘a reason’. That was the part I thought sounded pie in the sky

The Sun headline made me laugh with its "robots are taking over" slant. Doesn't make it untrue, just overly dramatic as usual.

I am in IT. Just last week, I wrote a piece of code that replaces two days of someone's manual time every time it is run. And it can be set to run automatically at pre-determined intervals, so don't even need that person to run it. It's literally set and forget work replacement.

But even a coder's work is being reduced. With easier ways to generate output, what used to take four hours to code when I started now takes 15 minutes.
