Who to talk about troubles to?

I have discovered something that will be life changing for me and not in a good way. I desperately need to talk to someone about it but I have no friends. I have three daughters but don’t want to talk to them about it at this point. I have two sisters but one has the compassion of a gnat and the other has mental health issues. It’s not something I can discuss online in case it’s seen before I’m ready to deal with it. I don’t belong to a church or anything like that. I thought about a counsellor but don’t really want to use up an appointment on something that doesn’t need professional help. Any ideas or thoughts? It’s not health related, by the way.

I think the Samaritans or mind would be good places to start if you didn’t wish to visit gp/counsellor/psychiatrist/psychologist etc

You may feel more comfortable taking the next step after speaking on the phone in confidence.

Whatever your issue-my thoughts are with you xxxx

It’s difficult to say without knowing the context, is it something that you could access an online support group about? Depending on the nature of the situation, there can be Facebook groups etc that can be a helpful forum to share experiences and gain advice. Or perhaps there is a charity that supports people in a similar situation (apologies if that’s not appropriate in this context). Also there may be some friendly dibbers who have experienced a similar thing who may be able to support...I know in the past people have posted anonymously about an issue if they preferred people not to be aware of who was posting.

In any event, I hope you are able to access some help or talk to someone who can support you through what ever you are facing, so that you get the best possible outcome.

Take care xx

Thank you. I didn’t know The Samaritans did that sort of thing. I thought it was for crisis help.

Whilst it may not be a physical health thing, it is clearly affecting your mental health. I mean that in a kindly manner. I think you should see your GP and let him be the judge of whether you need to see a health professional. Sometimes it is easier to talk to someone you don’t know. Good luck with everything.

I’d try the Samaritans too, they may be able to point you towards something more specialist if needed

There are a lot of secret Facebook groups for people who need to talk about sensitive things and often on official websites they can put you in touch with the admin via email who can then add you to the group and you can feel secure. Maybe ask an admin to post anonymously in a more public space if anyone can point you in the direction of a secret group? Do you feel you need someone with any particular knowledge or understanding or would just anyone who is sensitive and kind do? If it’s the latter maybe join a social walking group or a craft/book group?

Citizens Advice - if they can’t help directly they have access into lots of local and national support organisations and groups.

I’ve just looked up the Samaritans and I think that’s a very good option. I know that no one can give me the strength to do what I know I need to but I think I need to get it all out of my head. My girls know there’s a problem and have an inkling of what it is but it’s too personal for me to discuss with them. We are very close but I’m their mum and there has to be boundaries on what we can talk about. I know 100% they will support my decision though.
