We were in port from 7am - 1pm and I think we got off at about 9 as I remember waiting for the pirate museum to open!

It was much scruffier than I thought - but we thought it was worth getting off.
Going to look up the pirate museum as my DS (who will be 4 at the time) loves anything pirate related.

Thanks for all the replies, from some of the reports I've read it makes it seem much worse that what you are saying.

Suppose it's no worse than walking the 'strip' in the likes of Spain/Greece etc were they are trying to get you in the bars!

Exactly, they are just people trying to make a living. I was with my mum and two young girls. We never felt vulnerable.

We went to The Atlantis, I'd been there on holiday about 9 years before and wanted to visit again as I loved it plus my ex wanted to see what it was like. The beach is gorgeous and hotel is well worth a visit

If we went again, we wouldn't bother getting off the ship at Nassau or Freeport.

We always book into a resort when we visit Nassau
The Riu Resort have an all inclusive day pass for $70 per adult, $60 for teens and $50 for small children

We tend to book into Sandals now but that is adults only
