We have done two Med cruises and have always done DIY excursions at the port.
As has been mentioned, go on cruise critic and do a little research, there is a lot of info on there.

Thanks for this thread! We will hopefully be in the same position (I nearly said in the same boat) as we are about to book our first ever cruise! It will be 9 Sep 2017 for the 7 night Med cruise.
