I’m Scottish and would use squint to describe a picture that’s not hanging straight, I would also use it for the eye thing too and to describe squishing up your eyes to see something better.

I’m surprised it’s not a common word outside Scotland in the picture context. You learn something new every day

Never heard anyone say squift here in Solihull or Birmingham.

A squint is also an obtuse angled brick on a wall I believe.

Or a bit of an offcut corner in a wall allowing people to see the altar in churches where a wall would otherwise be in the way.
