Eastenders...

...who writes this ≈≈≈≈?

Not a single character with any redeemable traits.

A fat, bald fella commits crime upon crime upon crime for thirty years (without someone simply punching him in the face a time or two), impervious to the law, now wandering around with a "shootah" and shouting "eh" a lot (lost count in tonight's episode). Where's plod? Where's SCO19? Utter codswallop. Why's it so popular? Why's it aloud to be broadcast before the watershed? Just dark and nasty.

I love eastenders too. The only soap i watch. Half an hour where you can suspend belief, have a gossip about folk without harm as its not real and theres always someone worse off than yourself! The only complaint i have about this week is it wasnt on wednesday! Being able to shout at the telly "she could easily get her foot out of there! " Is half the fun!

Stopped watching Eastenders when Dirty Den came back from the river, too far fetched for me. I always loved Coronation Street and Emmerdale but hated all the murders, rapes and violence in them a few years ago and stopped watching them after watching them for around 40 years. I’m not against violence in programmes, I watch quite a few police/murder dramas, but I just found it depressing and unrealistic to see so many bad things happening to one community all the time.

I have watched it more often than not over the last thirty odd years. I have gone for periods of not watching as I have had two bouts of living overseas and have picked it up again relatively easily when I have come back. Anyway I have not watched since my trip to WDW in late a January last year, didn’t watch for two weeks and decided not to again and I don’t think I will. The stories are ridiculous.

It’s allowed because it’s the BBC’s view and belief that this show portrays “typical” East End London (which I don’t believe for one moment that it does). It’s allowed because it has an audience and will continue as such until time it loses that audience. It’s allowed because it allows the BBC a vehicle to promote its “messages” to the U.K. public. Tokenism are it’s best!

As with any soap the “flash to bang” timescale is incredibly rapid. A character states she wants to get into local politics , within 2 weeks she is the Mayoress - what? Soaps are as realistic as a Greggs vegan sausage roll IMO.

Stopped watching them now ...

Trouble is that soaps - being everyday tales of "normal life" normalize that sort of behaviour.

Do they take behaviour that already is happening and mirror it, or do they help create the atmosphere for this behaviour to take place in - a giant feedback loop (Tomorrowland coming to mind)

It’s a soap if it’s real life then soaps would be so boring. The house prices would be so cheap on theses soaps if the new arrivals read the local newspaper to read about the deaths that’s happened on them.
