Your views on best places to live in Wales

As the title suggests, we are going to relocate to Wales, we want a change of lifestyle and just love Wales.
As of yet we’ve no jobs to go to but am interested in lovely places we could live in Mid- Wales. Village or town locations is what would suit our children 18 & 20 for them to make new friendships.
Am looking forward to hearing about your ideas👍😁

Mmm. I know my way around the States more than Wales!

The key to where to live is based on employment. If people need to work then that massively narrows down where to live, probably very much like Scotland.

I am a City person so would favour Cardiff. But lets be honest is it much different than many other UK Cities? Probably not.

The Pembrokeshire area is devine, we also like the area around Monmouth so there you have the West and the East.

Here is my take on things when retired and it sadly happened to my Uncle & Aunt.

Buy where you can be happy when old and unable to drive and certainly be on your own. No good having the best view in the World and be totally isolated, lonely and unable to get to a shop.

Finally the budget. If buying in Cardiff a £250K budget will get you a shoebox. Really £450K is a realistic amount for something half decent.

Pembrokeshire the sky is the limit.

Mid Wales I would probably suggest the Newtown area. Especially as they opened a bypass last week after a 75 year wait for it!
Maybe Builth Wells.

Some nice properties around there but still not isolated

Tom M lives in South wales, but that's not to say he doesn't know lots about Mid Wales!

Gary/Sam, do you want rural? Coastal? Closer to English border?

ETA: Great reply Mr M!

I'm from Swansea, but now live in Bedfordshire.
My parents still live in a small village outside Swansea.
My brother and his family live in St Clears, just outside Carmarthen. He has a gorgeous new build house that is 5 times the size of ours for the same price.
Carmarthen is definitely improving. The shopping centre has really changed since I was younger. It has everything you need really. It's about 20 mins drive to Tenby and all the surrounding beaches, and it's not too far from Swansea.
I agree with Tom about making sure you have somewhere you can walk to amenities when you're older and won't leave you isolated.
Wales is lovely and I hope to go home to live eventually.

Thanks for the replies so far. We’ve spent a bit of time in Builth and we’re made to feel very welcome there.
We were told Newtown is about as far north to live if you’re English!
We want to live in a place that has at least a shop and a pub🍷🍷
I do like the west coast area by Aberystwyth but don’t know what employment is like there. Hubby and I are currently working in education and is not a viable option as we don’t speak Welsh so looking for a complete change. Still need the pennies though for mortgage and bills etc...

If you're happy to go further south, I was going to suggest somewhere within reach of Camarthen, too. Or the Crickhowell/Abergavenny area.

In Mid Wales, have you looked at Llandrindod Wells, Aberystwyth or, maybe, (little!) Lampeter?

Closer to the border, you might look at Brecon or Hay-on-Wye. (There isn't a lot going on in Hay, but it is close to Hereford.)

All the above will give you a quieter, more rural (to varying degrees) lifestyle, but, because, they're surrounded by even smaller places they have more amenities (relative to their size, that is).

Yeah went to Llandrindod but wasn’t feeling it. We liked Brecon but was told house prices are higher there.
Haven’t looked at Lampeter or Hay-on -Wye though🤔
Crickhowell looks pretty and hubby like Abergavenny, if he works in England still.
So many ifs and buts😬
