When do you tell your kids?

We are booked to go in July 2017 but haven't told our son yet. July seems such a long way away and so we didn't want to tell him until nearer the time. When/how did you tell your kids?

They just always know.

My girls are currently 5&6. We've taken them to Orlando when they were 1&3 and then 3&4 and have booked for next year when they'll be 6&7. They've know for ages and helped choose the hotel.

It's a personal choice but we love to chat to the girls about past WDW trips and what they are looking forward to next time. Also, how are kids supposed to learn patience if people never tell them about things that are happening until they actually happen!

We've got it written on our calendar and we're going to tell DS when he turns the calendar over to the month we're going. That'll be 25 days beforehand for him.

Ours are 13 and 15 and we normally tell them about a week before we fly so they have the surprise, excitement, can tell their friends, pack etc. They have zero interest in planning and have told us that they prefer the surprise (first and third time they knew when we booked, so we've done it both ways) so that's what we do now

For their first trip, we told our 3 children days after we booked (16 months out). For our next trip, we're telling them the weekend before we fly...so they have a few days of build-up/excitement. Whilst they talk about last years' trip so often, I really want to keep the spark and magic...16 months seemed such a long time to our 2 youngest. We know what each of them would love out of a future trip as we've talked about it lots, but other than that they won't be interested in the planning at all.

Our whole family love the planning. We have the Disney Parks CD in the car, especially on long trips. We listen to the WDW Radio podcast each week and just sent off for new Little Big book of magic as the previous ones were so worn. For us the holiday has begun again even though we only got back a month ago and are going again in 11 months. It gives the whole family joy and excitement to plan together. I'm insufferable at work too...
