Anyone been to Chicago?
Deciding where we could stop off for 2 or 3 days on our way to Orlando, we’ve done nyc a couple of times and loved it there and thinking Chicago would be similar?
Anyone been who can recommend things to do which would be interesting for a 22 and 19 year old (they’re not that into museums). It’ll be August so out of season for most sports unfortunately. |

Yes I have been. Nice to visit. I have only been into the centre on a v long layover for a day. The weather can be incredibly variable. In June it can be 90 or 50 with drizzle and low cloud. Lake Michigan is incredible - it literally looks like a sea even from an aeroplane. A lot of the shops etc are under the skyscrapers. You can get the elevated railway into the centre from the airport.

Yes for a week long conference - I enjoyed it but only really saw the centre. The lake is amazing and has a beach so you could relax there . I went to museums and galleries when I had the time so if your children aren’t into that then I am not sure what else there is to do for them - a trip up the water tower is a must tho. It’s a safe city in the centre but I am not sure it’s wise to venture further out ...

I went for 6 days with DH in 2015 - also preferred it to NY. We visited the Natural History museum, the Shedd Aquarium and the Planetarium. We went up both the Skydeck and 360 Chicago, took a cruise along the river, went to the zoo and rented bikes and cycled along Lake Michigan. There's lots to do on Navy Pier too, we played mini golf and went on a fireworks cruise. We bought the Go Chicago card which was great value: gocity/chicago/en-us

I also preferred Chicago to NY - I found it to be a smaller, cleaner & friendlier version of NY!
Loads to do - plenty of museums, Red Sox stadium, lovely lake, the pier has an amusement park and there is great shopping and dining. I also just really liked the feel of the place - just walking around and loved the architecture etc Been dying to go back actually!
