A compromise may be Old Key West? We stayed there twice and it's the only on site place I will tolerate as it's in Disney, but not really Disneyfied like the other places, it's easy to get away from the mouse. There are quiet pools away from everyone.
As there is no (not) free dinning plan, the other issue is onsite you are stuck paying lots of $$$$ for food of a lower standard than you can get of a higher standard outside the park for less. The hard rock is amazing, stayed there so many time. Absolutely lovely and rocking.. |

Onsite is not for us - never has been & never will be. Whilst we pretty much always do the Disney parks when in Florida, we want to escape from the Disney bubble.
We always stay at Sheraton Vistana Village on South I-Drive (near the Vineland Premium Outlets). Lovely resort & we can get a 2 bedroom apartment for little more then it would cost for two hotel rooms on I-Drive. We benefit from being able to self-cater, which adds up to quite a saving just on breakfasts alone (normally always eat out for lunch & dinner). There is a free shuttle bus to Disney & the Sheraton is on the I-Ride trolley route for in the evenings when we want to go out for dinner and enjoy a drink (also use Uber). It will be interesting to see what effect the Covid restrictions have on the on-site Disney hotels. As has already been said, with no free dining plan, no EMH's & no FP+, you are paying a premium price for very few benefits (i.e. DME & being able to charge items to your room on a MagicBand). An ex-colleague did two weeks onsite staying in Animal Kingdom Lodge (with dining plan) and they got fed up of the food offering & started eating off-site / getting takeaways delivered. Apparently the AKL duty manager took exception to the takeaway deliveries & had words with them about this. |

To be honest have never wanted to stay onsite. People will hate me for this but I wanted to escape Disney and I also wanted not to be surrounded by children 24/7. I’m not a children hater - I have 2 of my own (grown up now) and I worked in childcare for 15 years so when I went away I wanted a bit of a break.
We stay at the same hotel at LBV and love it - pool days it can literally be us round the pool it’s a bit like having a private pool. I also liked to have other food not just Disneyfied food for 2 weeks - and obviously as we don’t drive we wouldn’t drive offsite for a change. But DH decided that he wants to do it different this time - for his birthday which was missed this year but just as a complete change to our usual for our first trip as a couple in 25 years. |

Excited about Disney

I think of you research you can have a brilliant variety of food. Need to plan it out a bit, but part of the fun. As just adults, maybe think about eating in some of the lounges. The nomad lounge in AK had a limited, but tasty menu. The cocktails were good too!
Oh, and uber is easy to use to get offsite, if you fancy a change. Sadly, I always have the need to go to Taco Bell!

I honestly wonder whether CBR is a good fit for you given what you’ve said.
CBR is nice enough but not comparable to HRH in any way but it will be very hard to escape children! You may prefer the quiet pools, we’ve found the main pools very very busy with kids (understandably!) which suited us perfectly when we had them, but not now ours are grown up

Offsite is only ever a car journey, Uber etc away..no need to be constrained to Disney/universal food regardless. I’ve loved our offsite apartment etc stays - definitely cheaper and more space. But I’m up for a change and can see why you are, despite the overeating plan not being included 🤣 and RPR has our heart since first family stay, so on that front I wouldn’t opt for offsite universal again ever. Spoilt lol.
