Depends what time of year and day
I've drove the route several times, but did it once in the rain during summer months , was a horrible drive couldn't see 20 foot in front of the car for about an hour. Edited at 11:41 PM. |

We flew into Fort Lauderdale back in August and I'd echo what others have said about it being an easy drive up. I'd also recommend a hotel local to the airport that first night as it is a good 3-4 hour very boring drive.

Thanks for tips - looking at oct/nov when kids will be 7 and 3. Just a little bit concerned about how they will cope with the drive after the flight

We have done the drive up a few times straight after landing and its quite easy and even better if you share the driving... As for the children i would think they would fall asleep and you can stop of on the way and have dinner... We saved about £800 for 2 of us as well worth it..

We too are flying into Miami, from Leeds though going via LHR.
Our flight arrives around 6.00 pm. By the time we have done immigration and collected our luggage I reckon it will be around 8.00. Initially we were just going to stay at the Sofitel airport hotel overnight they have a free shuttle to and from the airport. Now we will be staying somewhere on Miami Beach for two nights and enjoying the sights of Miami a little before heading to Disney. As others have said you definately need to stay overnight as your body clocks will be on UK time. The drive up the turnpike is not that bad, yes it's boring, the service stations are great compared to ours here in the UK. Maybe stop off twice to break the journey for the little ones. You will be wide awake at silly o,clock and hopefully beat most of the other tourists heading to MCO. It takes around 4 hours. Make sure you stick to the speed limits.

We arrive into Miami just after 2pm and will drive up the coast a little to Fort Lauderdale - we've booked a hotel on the beach, so the kids can have a bit of a play before heading up to Orlando the following day.
