congratulations

best tips for doing it on a budget are
1) to haggle and never accept the 1st price straight away ask for time to think about it.
2)make a budget and then add a buffer as the costs can really get away from you if you don't need it then bonus.
3)stick to what you really need and avoid adding luxury extras unless you really want/need/can afford them

my sdd got married last year and due to circumstances they did it last minute and on a tight budget
they got family members to take photos & do hair/make up
bridesmaids dresses were regular evening dresses brought in the sales- "bridesmaid" dresses can cost double for virtually the same thing
she got her flowers from a local independent florist who was prepared to haggle more over prices.
We have a friend with a rather nice car collection who supplied the brides transportation as a wedding gift
she even managed to get her dress off the rack in the sale and an extra discount on it too.
her cake was ordered as a birthday cake rather than a wedding one and was a lot cheaper- they had a 3 tier sponge cake with mickey heads on

they did have the ceremony at the registry office but the rest was done on a cheap hotel package which covered the meal & evening do along with overnight accommodation for the bride/groom and discounts on any other rooms wanted

One thing I would check is the arrangements between the meal & the evening do as a few we have been too were done in the same room and that leaves an awkward hr or so when everyone's stood around in the bar area not knowing what to do while they turn it around.

We have friends who are getting married next year doing the whole hotel wedding and they are paying out serious money as they keep getting talked into adding extras and making upgrades.

Congratulations!

February 2020 for us. Very traditional though - married in the minster and then reception in a victorian country house. In the thick of the planning with deposits going out left right and centre :/

whilst it's always worth trying to haggle a bit, also bear in mind that a lot of us *professional* wedding suppliers don't actually do discounts on their services unless you're getting married on a tuesday in february. (basically i don't discount for thurs-sun april-november - if you aren't prepared to pay my price, i only have a limited number of dates available each year, i will find someone who WILL pay easily enough. especially as 80% of my bookings are done at *least* 6 months in advance, and around 30% or booked at least a year in advance)

i may offer a bit of a discount for ordering multiple services (eg on top of the evening disco, having an early setup with background music during the meal, as well as uplighting and evening photography - order all three and get £50 off) but i would never lower my base price that i quote for clients. I find this is insulting to everyone involved.

those companies who come straight back and say "i'll knock £100 off as you asked so nicely" are no better than double glazing or car salesmen, and i would personally be a bit wary of them in the first place with their artificially inflated pricing structures.

personally though, i think the DJ and photographer are the biggest factors to a memorable day. one captures it, the other creates it. nobody remembers nice chair covers or an overly elaborate cake. the best wedding cakes i've seen are usually not even cake. the giant pork pie/wheels of cheese combo was great, as was the tower of brownies.

but get a bad photographer or DJ, and things could be ruined, or a lot more stressful than they should be. if you even remotely care about music, have a meeting with any prospective DJs, find out whether its them you are booking, or a multi-op where they will send along someone else. some venues only allow their resident to play. be wary of these venues, and if the DJ isnt up to scratch, be prepared to walk away form the whole venue (check this clause before signing/paying anything!) - some resident DJs can be great, but an amount of them are lazy hacks who just play the same playlist for all gigs and has no intention of playing that half hour grunge section you asked for in the client meeting... ask them about the sort of stuff you like, see if they are even remotely enthusiastic or engaging when they talk about your love of early 2000's pop-punk. if they gloss over it, and say they will see how things go on the night, and only play it if it keeps the dancefloor packed when they are playing abba and the cha-cha slide, be prepared to walk away!

if all you want is ed sheeran, recent chart stuff and the "classics" then go get that cheap/resident option. but if you want anything even remotely specialist, be prepared to pay a bit more, and make sure you are on the same wavelength at a meeting

if you have any questions about the evening side of things, just holler (a pm would be good if i don't reply within a day or two)

HTH
Thanks ever so much for your message. We have a friend who is in a covers band who does weddings often, and we are hoping that if we can line the dates up to use them, they are offering us a very very good deal. He's said 2 x 1 hour sets, and then we can pick our playlist for the breaks.

Controversially I know we won't be having a photographer. Just getting a couple of our friends good with photos to snap a few.

Going to the venue on Thursday hopefully to see if we can make it all work

We went to my nieces wedding yesterday! It was in a local hotel
they had the hotel wedding package, very nice too what a lovely way to get married! speak to your hotel and see what packages they do, they will suit it to your needs.

This is exactly what we've got - I can't wait! We choose the material used in the sets as well. We weren't going to have one, until we came across them at a wedding fair and then it turned out my OH knows the lead. Then my mum and dad fell in love with them and the rest was history

We were married in a hotel nearly 8 years ago, and whilst we blew our budget (our choice), we did do a couple of things which made it individual and saved us some cash!
One was not to have a buffet in the evening - we had a meal for those there all day, but in the evening we had a cheese wedding cake (a huge tower of cheese stacked up - happy to pass on the details of the amazing company we used) which we provided and the hotel agreed to provide fresh bread, crackers and chutneys. I have a bit of an issue with tepid buffet food or curled up sandwiches which will happen about 15mins after the food is served - a cheese board stops this from happening. We also cut our wedding cake and served some of that too.
Our music was provided by friends who I roped in and they sang fabulously for us, and we had no cars either. I made the table decorations and the confetti/cones to display it in and reimagined an old hamper to store it all in.
I bought 30 pairs of VERY cheap flip flops online which I tied in pairs with ribbon and left by the dance floor for girls to change into in the evening - nobody likes sore feet after standing in heels all day.
Our reading was a poem by Pam Ayres - Yes I'll Marry You which was lighthearted but still appropriate. My best friend got married in September and her mum read the Dr Seuss "Oh, the places you'll go" and there was not a dry eye in the house - it's really great for a wedding.
Congrats and enjoy the planning together!

We used The Cheese Shed (thecheeseshed) which is a British company who specialise in UK cheese. They are based in the west country and also do cracking cheese gifts - we have sent cheese to lots of people at christmas etc! We always order our own Christmas cheese to be delivered from there - they are reliable, helpful and have excellent customer service if there is a problem.
That's reminded me... must go and order our Christmas cheese now!
