Question hayfever in younger children?

ds is 8 and the last few days has been suffering really badly with hayfever
I've got him on benadryl for children and that is providing some relief during the day from the congestion/sneezing but he's still getting really congested overnight so hardly sleeping and has awful reddish panda eyes so wondering if there is anything else I can try that might help? there doesn't seem to be much suitable for under 12's other than the allergy syrup

he's not been going outside and we have all the windows closed

My DS is 8 and we found that my DH's Loratadine hayfever tablets were suitable for over 30kg kids (which is he). He's been taking one of those per day along with a nasal spray and it's been helping.

My 2 both used loratadine from a young age, eldest is now on hospital prescribed antihistamines. I also used to put vaseline under their eyes and nose and on the eyelids to help. I do it now for myself.

DS is bad at the moment. He uses piriton liquid which offers him some relief. Cold cotton wool pads on his eyes help too.

I have had bad hayfever since I was young.

One thing I do which most people would not think about is I don't dry my clothes out on the line. Yes I know it goes against everything UK and Irish mammies do. The same with my sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases, all are dried inside in the summer.

Keep a record of when the symptoms start. I know that my hayfever is bad from 1 June to the end of July. Therefore I start taking antihistamine in May. This is to have a build up in my system when my symptoms start.

Over the years I have tried almost every brand and generic. I find the non drowsy Loratadine works best for me. The brand name is Claratyn. I take 1 tablet every night before I go to bed.

Sleeping is hard sometimes, so I have learnt over the years to sleep sitting up. Yes its something which we are told is not good, but for me when my hayfever is bad, its the only way I can breathe at night.

Also check the pillows and duvet. I don't use feather pillows or down duvets.

For morning times, when he wakes up with the crusty eyes, have a wet facecloth beside his bed, so that when he wakes up and his eyes are icky, he can feel refreshed easily.

There are also eye wipes that you can get in the chemist which he can keep in his pocket during the day to clean his eyes.

Unfortunately, non hayfever sufferers don't really understand just how much the symptoms take out of you.

For me, the easiest way to describe how I feel, the inside of my nose feels like I am breathing in pepper all the time. That tingly itchy feeling that you can't do anything about

My ds has meds from the go. Cetrizine liquid medicine, avymys (a steroid nasal spray) and anti histamine eye drops.

Usually he just needs the cetrizine and avymys but on a bad day needs his eye drops and his inhaler

DS gets it really bad. Cold cotton wool pads, nose spray, eye drops and clarytyn and vaseline combination just about keeps on top of it.

He always finds beginning of June the worst and starts his tablets around end of April .

Its horrible, I get it but nowhere near as bad as he does.
