Argentina: Summer In Winter - Spring 2019: Day 2 Iguazu Falls
I was actually surprised as having gone to sleep around 8pm I didn't wake up again until 4am. O did even better and only woke up when I made him at 6.30am! We decided to go back to the cafe near the hotel again for breakfast. We ordered just the Tropical breakfast (toast, jam, croissants, fruit salad, coffee and cake) plus O had a smoothie. His choice of cake was a chocolate dulce de leche - a good balanced diet This came to 420 pesos - around 10 euros. We went back to the hotel, ordered a taxi and checked out then grabbed our bags. This was our 4th airport of the trip - Aeroparque. It is nearer the centre of BA and mainly domestic flights. It took about 20 minutes in the taxi and cost only 7 euros. We were flying with Norwegian Argentina who had recently set up in Argentina. We got both flights for less than 200 euros return with bags - so far less than their competitors. Check in was quite slow as there were two flights leaving at the same time. Security was quick (O was not convinced about it). We boarded via a bus not long after arriving at the gate. The flight was about 70% full. There were three crew members but we only saw them for the pre- flight and pre-landing checks. No drinks or food were offered - even for sale. I guess the amount they make is less than the time/cost of cleaning! The flight took 1h30 and we arrived on time at Iguazu Airport (airport number 5)! The airport is small - we walked across the tarmac straight into the baggage hall where our bags arrived in about 10 minutes. On the flight we discussed our plans for the day. We had thought we would just chill out but the weather forecast for the following 2 days was not good! We decided we would hit the Argentinian side of the falls. Our Airbnb host, Erik, was meeting us at the airport. I had organised with him all our transport over the three days. He was happy with our change of plans - though he said that we should ho straight there as otherwise we were going in the wrong direction to go to the flat and then back again. So we had to get our things out of the suitcase (hats, suncream) and put all our valuables into my daypack! It was about a 20 minute drive to the Falls. Erik suggested we should also do our second day the following day as we would get 50% off the cost of the entry. We would do the Brazil side on our last day - normally not recommended but as we were not flying until 11.55pm then we would have time for any immigration delays. It cost 1500 pesos to get in - about 30 euros. Erik gave us some advice as to how to plan our visit! We first took the Green trail after putting on suncream and buying some water - it was hot! About 38C hot! This trail was just a linking trail upto the central section and took about 15 minutes. And saw our first animal - a coatis. They were everywhere - though rather cheeky and apparently quite vicious if they got they claws into you! We decided to take the Lower Trail first. This is a 2500m circular trail. This was our first glimpse of the Falls. The guidebooks say: Iguazú Falls or Iguaçu Falls are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. Together, they make up the largest waterfall system in the world. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. We continued around the trail - a few photos to follow! Looking towards Brazil. They really were spectacular! The trails were easy to navigate - basically metal open flooring with handrails/fences. We also saw the tail end of a marriage proposal on an offshot trail - whoops! We didn’t click until we were there so made a hadty retreat! They both looked happy though! You can do a boat trip - we planned to do that on our Brazil day! After finishing the Lower Trail we decided to have lunch. This was a bit of a disaster. The choice for non meat eaters were not great so we got a pizza, three spinach empanadas (like a small pasty), a portion of fries and two sprites at a cost of 590 pesos(about 15 euros). We had barely sat down when a coati pounced on the table and nicked my empanadas! We decided to eat indoors (not much place) and I got three more empanadas! None of it was great! But it filled us up a little! We then went on the Upper Trail. This was a lot more open - so very hot! Again some fabulous views! We loved seeing all the rainbows coming off the water! We also spotted this bird though I have no idea what it is! We made our way back to the beginning of the trail. By now we had gone through 2 litres of liquids as it was just so hot. It was by now about 4pm so we decided to call it a day. We knew it would take us about 20m to get back to the base station where we could whatapp Erik to pick us up! We saw this as we came down - I think it is an alligator but O was not convinced. It was difficult to make out his head! We got back about 5.30pm and went to our Airbnb. It is very clean and functional though basic. However the two bedrooms have aircon and the wifi meets O approval! We got ourselves sorted out and had a rest before walking down to the Tri-Frontier point where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet. We went to a restaurant nearby - big fail on the photos! Another not so great meal - we both ordered fish with a side of fries. The fries came 20 minutes after the fish! The fish was okay but nothing more and it was expensive for what it was (about 30 euros including 3 bottles of water). We headed back and were asleep not long after. Edited at 02:31 AM. |

Wow, looks spectacular and so hot. Must have been fabulous to see.
Cheeky coati stealing your lunch ! Sounds a bit hit and miss on the food front. Good that the Airbnb place turned out ok and a great host by the sound of it. Love that shot with the rainbow, beautiful. And I agree, alligator definitely.

Breakfast was great but the rest - not so much. Not exactly easy being non meat eating in Argentina!
We loved the rainbows! The views were spectacular! Glad you agree alligator

Those falls are amazing, beautiful photos. Sounds as if your Airbnb host is very helpful too. Such a shame about the food, you said you were concerned about this before the trip. At least the views make up for the food though 😀

The views were amazing! We have eaten enough - though a lot of it has been just food not a pleasure! But the objective was the Falls and that we have managed
