Car Insurace
Hi all, just a quick question!
Has anyone ever booked car insurance in Britain, with a British insurance company, before holiday? Someone I was talking to today says they always do this and the most recent cost was £108! I’ve not heard of this before! Thanks x |

There are certainly 2 people I know of who sometimes come on here that have done it, maybe a few more.
This was discussed in part a few days ago and this may help you out. https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho... php?t=1120261 It is possible to do it but it's not for me or 99.9% of others on here. You will need to have a big credit limit on your Credit Card as it is not unusual for the rental company to bill you for damage to the rental car and you then have to invoice your UK Insurer. The big thing to be wary of like in Europe is pre existing damage. For example book a normal package and it has zeo excess, all rental cars have damage on them as we know. When you return it they couldn't care less what state it is in. Use your own Insurance and they can hit you with every cost under the sun as it's in their interest to do it to make up their income. One for you to decide.

I buy a cdw/sli (collision damage and supplimentary Insurance) when I get the “free” car with a virgin package. I think but am not certain so you’d need to check) that as a stand-alone policy that covers everything you need.
I usually get quotes from here moneymaxim Never had any problems like you hear about in Europe with them trying to say the insurance isn’t valid and selling you thiers anyway. They do ask but I just say I have a separate policy. Also no problems with pre existing damage. First couple of time I photographed and videoed every scratch and dent I could find! Alamo at least never tried to charge me Edited at 09:25 AM. |

The proof is in the claim. Have you ever had to claim?
I basically wrote off an Alamo car, one phone call and signature on a new contract and we were driving away in a replacement car a couple hours later. Never had any more calls, or paperwork to fill out. This was 1/2 way from KSC to Kissimmee. We had Alamos insurance. That’s the main reason I take the rental cars insurance, for convenience and no worry, no argument coverage. I go to Florida on holiday not to mess with sorting out any accident with a U.K. company thousands of miles away and all the calls that would entail. Yes stand alone insurance will work and is totally fine as others say on here. I’m just giving my own reasons for using Alamos own insurance. Each to their own. Choose whichever you are comfortable with. |

Oh I wouldn’t get standalone by choice! Clearly an “all inclusive deal” is a much better bet.
I’ve only done this when I’ve had a “free” car with inadequate insurance. Roughly over a 10 day rental the cheapest option was the add on insurance the next best was a completely new hire (generaly about £100-150 more) next was upgrading with Virgin-a bit more than just hiring another car-funny how expensive the free car is! I am in the fortunate position of having two travel credit cards so would always have a spare card pay the hotel bill if they used up my entire credit limit! Not going with virgin this year so will be getting Alamo’s Insurance! Edited at 10:58 AM. |

Thanks for this Mr Morrow!
We would never consider it as we haven’t heard about it before, it appears so much cheaper but for that very reason we don’t think it will be as comprehensive or as comfortable Thanks for reply x |
