Driving at that time at night would not bother me.
The car rental places at LAX are not far from the main terminal.

That's what I would do , be much less traffic at night , can you not cancel the LAX hotel ?

Driving at that time on the freeways won't be a problem and should be (relatively quiet). The 2 routes up to Universal would either be straight up the 405 and southwards on 101, or east from LAX on 105 the north on 110 and 101. Both should be fine but second route does cut up pretty much through downtown LA and at that time I'd go up the 405 which is a better drive anyway. I've done both, most recently the 405 last summer on a Saturday morning and it took 35 minutes.

Avoid leaving the freeways in search of a shortcut especially around LAX and wider vicinity.
