Forkbeard - many thanks for the two useful links. I'll go through them in detail to make sure I'm not caught out.
I once got a traffic violation in La Jolla for parking. Apparently if you park on a hill you have to point your front wheels into the kerb.

You're most welcome.

Sorry about the violation.

I once stayed in La Jolla, nice place. Definitely didn't know that rule and a lot of hills around there too.

It's likely to be true that wearing a helmet in a car also saves lives, should we make helmets in cars compulsory?

Some states require a minimum age and some are now considering a buy-in option if you want to ride without a lid. I think compulsory organ donation could be an option too.

Now it is impossible to argue that leathers are a bad thing, but I still wouldn't force people to wear them same as I wouldn't force people not to smoke or drink. More people killed by smoking and drinking than not wearing a helmet.

Can't say I agree with this at all but you're free to do what you wish in a state that allows this.

Keep safe.

Having been thro an advanced MC driving course organised by the Police, and seeing some of their training videos of Traffic Officers turning up at scenes of accidents, I would never ride without full protective gear.
In fact once I sold my last bike I bought a Westfield sports car, and used to wear a helmet when driving out of town, not trusting my head to a rollover bar.

Each to their own of course. You risk assess then make your choice.

Having attended and dealt with fatals of motorcyclists I have to say anybody who doesn't wear a helmet is an idiot.

The vast majority of us live risky lives, and we draw lines in the sand; some smoke, some drink, some do little exercise, some take pharmaceuticals, some illegal drugs, some live in heavily polluted cities, some work until they die, some have stressful jobs, some drive, some fly, some skydive, some climb mountains...

None of us eliminate all risk. How many of us drive at 5mph? We all know the reduction in risk is huge at that low speed, but how many do it? How many wear helmets in a car? We all know the reduction in risk.

We balance risk with pleasure, personally I prefer no smoking, no drinking, running 12 miles without breaking a sweat, no eating crap (unless I'm in Florida , living in woodland with fresh air, weighing the same as I did when I was 18... Taking your own risk and claiming it rational and judging someone else and claiming them idiotic is at best unreasonable.

Is the idiot the person who understands the risks and lives life to the full... or is the idiot the person who reaches for an ad hominem attack in the first sentence?

Sorry, never did Latin in school. Just quoting from life experiences and having to tell bereaved families. Not pleasant I can assure you.

I never did Latin either, but hopefully you got my point.

This is one my brother attended recently:

Not a helmet death this one, and at low speed too

I'm not entirely ignorant of the risks, but I think it's all too easy to unfairly judge one type of risk over and above another.

Convenience, pleasure... these come with risks.
