Do we need to buy 14 or 21 day tickets?

So after having to cancel our WDW trip 5 days before we were due to fly last year I'm now looking at booking for 2018 when (fingers crossed) the free dining comes out.

We are looking at going for 17/18 days but only wanting to buy the 14 day ultimate tickets as we would like a couple of days and the start and end of the holiday just to relax. Would we still be able to get the free dining for the whole 17/18 days or would we have to buy the 21 day tickets to get free dining?

Free dining is in combination with tickets bought at the same time. As far as I know a 14 day ticket will give 14 day QSDP or DDP depending on resort. You would have to work out the extra cost of the 21 days ticket v what you would pay for food for the extra days.

Sorry, but that's not right. Free dining is done by the number of nights at the resort, not the ticket bought. So a stay of 17/18 nights will get 17/18 nights worth of credits with a 14 day ticket. No need to buy the 21 day one if it's not wanted/needed.
