Day twelve
Today was our last Universal day so we decided to head straight for the park and have breakfast there. By the time we'd ridden Gringotts, (twice!) it was after 10am. We couldn't get a seat anywhere nearby as (surprise surprise) it was raining again so we ended up back at the bakery near the entrance, the Beverly Hills Boulangerie, where I got a french toast muffin and Marie a croissant. This time with butter & jam.
French Toast Muffin Croissant Lunch was Bubba Gumps again as we'd enjoyed it so much the last time. Again I didn't need to wave my Landry's card as it was quiet but when they know you're a select club member the manager comes over to say hello and ask if you need anything. The same thing happened in Rainforest Cafe. It's a really nice touch I think. Our server was excellent, even before I said I was a select club member! She did the usual Forrest Gump quiz and this time we got all the questions right! Marie had the Chicken Cordon Blue sandwich which she really enjoyed and said she'd have it again. It was basically chicken with ham and cheese. I'm sorry but I had the burger again. Really it isn't all I eat but I seemed to have one of those trips when it was what I fancied from the menu! A nice burger and I enjoyed it. Dinner was Wolfgang Puck's Express again in the hope it would redeem itself after the pasta we'd had the last time. I had the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf with mashed potato and crispy onion rings. I'd had my eye on it for a while but hadn't been in the mood the last visit. It was really nice but filling and I struggled to finish it. I'd definitely get it again though. Marie had the Macaroni & Cheese which wasn't cheesy enough for her. Very seldom do we find a mac & cheese that's cheesy enough for her, especially in the US. I tasted it though and thought it was really nice and would have finished it if I hadn't been so full from mine! For dessert I got the Creme Brulee which was ok. Marie ordered the frozen yoghurt however it never appeared. She wasn't too bothered though as she was full and we just left. Creme brulee. Day thirteen
Today was our last full day and the day we checked in to the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa for one night. We didn't really have anything planned other than MNSSHP later that day so we took our time and just had some Minibons that we'd got at Universal the day before for breakfast.
Minibon Our room was ready as soon as we checked in around 9.30am which was great so we lounged around the pool most of the day. We used our last counter service credit on lunch at Gasparilla Island Grill. Even the CS restaurant is more upmarket than other hotels! The seats are comfier and it's one of those places where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. I had the Pepperoni Flatbread. It was nice but a bit greasy. Marie had the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich again but said it wasn't as nice as the one from Bubba Gumps. I would expect that given it was a CS place though. This came with crisps which were really nice. Dinner was at Liberty Tree Tavern before MNSSHP. We love LTT and make an ADR for every trip whether we have DDP or not. It's a set menu served family style where they bring plates of food to your table you help yourself from. You can ask for more if you want to. For dinner you get a salad first served with a Strawberry Vinaigrette which is really tasty but tends to make the salad a bit soggy. Bread Salad For the main there's turkey, roast beef, pork, corn bread stuffing, mashed potato, macaroni cheese, gravy and seasonal veg. Our veg was green beans and sweet potato. Dessert is a cake with craisins and apples served with ice cream. This is yummy and we managed to eat most of it! We love LTT and it's always a welcome change from all the fried food we invariably end up eating. Our server was OK but kept disappearing and we seemed to wait ages after scanning our magic band for the final receipt. In the end we just left the tip in cash and went. Day fourteen
This was our last day . Our flight was at 6.25pm so we had a few hours and went to MK for the morning. We were no longer on DDP with our credits having expired at midnight the day before. For breakfast we had pastries we'd got as dessert at Gasparilla Island Grill the day before. We both got the Chocolate Twist. These were really nice but as with other pastries we'd had would probably have been better when they were fresh.
For lunch we decided to try and get into a table service restaurant to avoid the lunchtime scrum of the CS places. We checked the app on arriving at the park and had our choice of Liberty Tree Tavern or The Plaza for the time we wanted and opted for The Plaza. Mid-morning we were a bit hungry and passed a corn-dog stand. I stopped and considered it but then Marie reminded me I had wanted to try the corn dog nuggets from Casey's so we wandered over there and got one between us and a portion of french fries in case Marie didn't like them. The corn dog nuggets were really tasty and there was loads in the cup. Every time we thought we were getting close to the bottom we'd spot more! These were only around $4.49 but unfortunately didn't qualify as a snack credit for some reason. We were paying OOP anyway. Corn dog nuggets and fries We were worried we'd not have an appetite for lunch but we managed! I had The Plaza Club sandwich and Marie the tuna sandwich. I found the club sandwich was ok but really difficult to eat! As is typical in Disney they layer on the cold meat to the point you can't actually get your mouth round it! I ended up taking some off so I could eat it. Marie enjoyed her tuna sandwich and didn't have the same problems I had! The Plaza Club Tuna Salad Sandwich Our last proper meal of the holiday was at the airport. We ended up at Outback Steakhouse. The only place we could see was Burger King and I fancied a decent meal. I had the fillet steak which I got with a baked potato and you also got a salad. I chose a caesar salad. Marie got a burger. The steak was lovely and a nice way to finish up the holiday. Caesar salad Fillet steak with baked potato. Marie's burger is in the background. Finally there was the plane food. This was not even close to being as good as the outbound journey. Again by the time they got to us at the back of PE there were only two choices left and one was the vegetarian option. We both had the chicken stroganoff which came with noodles. This was awful. There was hardly any sauce and what there was didn't taste of much. There was no sauce for the noodles which were just ribbons of soggy pasta. Even the little salad wasn't nice. Dessert was a Dulce de Leche cheesecake which was ok. Later they brought us an American breakfast. For some reason we ended up with the vegetarian option which had mushrooms and beans instead of the meat along with scrambled egg and hash brown. Again this was not nice. There was a blueberry muffin with it too which was quite dry. No pictures as no one would want to see any of it! So that's my dining report. Laid out like that it seems less than two weeks! Overall I'm glad with most of our choices and there's certainly a few we'll do if we get free DDP the next time. Definitely the signature restaurants. |
