Mobile Taking son’s daughter advice please

We’re currently in the process of trawling flights for next summer and ds has asked if his girlfriend can come, she has her own money and her family are happy for her to come but with it being a year away I’m well aware a lot can happen.

Has anyone had to cancel a party member and what happened with refunds, did of affect your booking etc?

Thanks in advance

If you book a BA fly drive it’d be just loss of deposit for her (and the car hire cost would be spread amongst fewer of you so a small increase) alternatively you could book flight and one night hotel (could be at your departure airport night before you fly) on the same basis.
What type of accommodation are you thinking of ? A villa booked separately would be the same price regardless of numbers.

Thank you. We’d be splitting our stay between our DVC and an apartment or villa so costs would remain the same for that.

How old are they and how long have they been together?

Back in the 90’s I remember my brother doing this, going with his then gf and her family. They split up, he still went but was an awkward 2 weeks!

Equally though my wife and I met at 19 and 17, and have been together ever since, we booked our first holiday together 6 months later for 6 months down the line

They are 16 and 17 and will be 17 and 18 when we travel. They’ve been together 8 months and have spent lockdown moving between our homes. They are very sensible kids. But like I say I’m aware that things go wrong.
If all that would be lost is her deposit it sounds like it’s not too big of a risk to us

On our second visit our sons GF was booked to come with us but about 6 months before we were due to go he found out she was seeing someone else.
The relationship ended so I had to cancel her place we’d booked 2 rooms and the travel agent said it was an extra £700 which I wasn’t willing to pay so he had to share with us and his brother.

Cancelling will depend on your airline's T&Cs and how far out it is cancelled. My sister and her boyfriend had been together for over 4 years and he'd come with us in 2016. He broke up with her a week before we were due to go in 2018. No money back at all.
I'm not about doom and gloom but I'd let her book her stuff separately/get her money before booking.
That sounds so mercenary, I know but it's hundreds/up to a thousand pounds.

We had this happen with my DS and his Gf. Virgin allowed us to change the name on the ticket free of charge, as he had a new girlfriend by the time we travelled she came with us.

I wonder if the lack of refund was due to the dates. I won’t be paying anything towards her share without having the money and will make sure her parents understand that the won’t be any refunds unless the airline pay out if she doesn’t end up coming

I agree with booking a package as you can change the name quite easily whereas flight only you lose. I had this same dilemma when I booked last year for August 2020. Little did I know this was the least of my concerns 😁. They are still together as it happens
